ASU Breaks Big 12 Record With 1:21.16 200 Medley Relay

In a Big 12 landscape that looks very different at the top than it did last year, Arizona State is establishing themselves as the team to beat early in the meet.

In the first event, the 200 medley relay, the Sun Devils came out swinging, taking down a three year old conference record for their first Big 12 championship swim. Later in the meet, they also broke the meet record in the men’s 800 freestyle relay.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay

The previous record in the event was 1:21.36 set by Texas back in 2022. The Sun Devils went two tenths faster tonight, finishing in 1:21.16.

Freshman Lucien Vergnes opened them up, splitting 20.66 on the backstroke. Andy Dobrzanski went 2nd in 23.10 on the breaststroke. Ilya Kharun picked up another top-10 relay split on the fly, touching in 19.21 to replace himself at 10th, and Jonny Kulow split 18.19 on the freestyle leg. All four men had the fastest split in the field.

The biggest differences in the splits came in the breaststroke and butterfly. Caspar Corbeau swam the breaststroke leg in 22.55 compared to Andy Dobrzanski’s 23.10. ASU made up for this difference on their fly leg, Ilya Kharun went 19.21 to Alvin Jiang’s 20.08.

Their time tonight comes in at 4th overall this season in the Division 1 rankings. At last week’s SEC Championships, Tennessee broke the NCAA record in 1:20.22 to come in first. Florida and Texas were not far behind at 1:20.66 and 1:20.75 respectively. ASU will slot in just ahead of Cal’s 1:31.54 from ACCs.

On top of their conference record. Ilya Kharun replaces himself in 10th on the all-time split list with his 19.21. The previous split was 19.24 from the 2023 NC State Invite. Kharun owns five of the ten spots, all five of them were swam this season.

800 Free Relay

Later in the session, the ASU men also broke the meet record in the men’s 800 freestyle relay. They finished with a time of 6:08.54, which was, again, two tenths under the previous time held by Texas.

They did not break the Big 12 record, which stands at 6:03.42 from 2023.
