Howard Cruises To Sweep of Catholic On Senior Day

WASHINGTON (February 1, 2025) – Howard University women’s swimming & diving team dominated crosstown rival Catholic, 184-49, on Senior Day inside Burr Gym Pool.

HU finished the regular season on a two-meet win streak.

Collectively, the Bison took home 13 gold medals.

The 200 Medley Relay squad of senior Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas), junior Zuilda Nwaeze (Columbia, Md.) and sophomores Chanice Posada (Houston) and Myeisha Sharrieff (Bermuda) opened the afternoon with a victory, recording a time of 1:44.47.

Individually, Thompson earned first place in the 200 IM (2:12.42) and 100 Breast (1:07.29).

Nwaeze, senior Jorden Hill (Birmingham, Ala.) and graduate Isabella Fountain (White Plains, N.Y.) secured first (51.14), second (55.34) and third (55.48), respectively, in the 100 Free.

Posada and fellow classmate Summer McKoy (Pikesville, Md.) locked up the top two spots, finishing first (58.28) and second (1:01.15), respectively, in the 100 Back.

Third-year Bison Skylar Debnam (Chandler, Ariz.) claimed gold in the 200 Free (2:00.14) and 500 Free (5:21.64).

Junior Kali Garcia (Altamonte, Fla.) and sophomore Iala Cropper (Rochester, N.Y.) finished first (10:58.33) and third (11:18.00), respectively, in the 1000 Free.

Senior Kelsey Roberson (West Orange, N.J.) and sophomore Jasmine Morgan (Chicago) took gold (24.55) and silver (24.82), respectively, in the 50 Free.

Junior Samyra Benoit (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and rookies Seannia Norville-Smith (Nassau, Bahamas) and Dallas Young (Raleigh, N.C.) swept the podium, placing first (59.00), second (59.98) and third (1:01.01), respectively, in the 100 Fly.

Morgan, Nwaeze, Roberson and freshman Gabrielle Vickles (El Dorado, Trinidad & Tobago) wrapped up the meet with a win in the 200 Free Relay (1:38.42).

On the board, senior Jordynn Connell (Flower Mound, Texas) came away victorious in the 1-meter (239.35 points) and 3-meter (199.60 points) dives.

During the meet, Howard Director of Swimming & Diving Nicholas Askew and the staff recognized 11 Bison overall, including five on the women’s side, for their hard work and dedication to the program: Connell; Hill; Roberson; Thompson and manager Gabrielle Rose.

On Feb. 19-22, Howard goes to Geneva, Ohio for the Northeast Conference Championships.

Overall, the Bison produced 11 first-place finishes.

Graduate Tristan Stevens (Chicago), seniors Darin Johnson (Atascocita, Texas) and senior Erald Thompson III (Nassau, Bahamas) and junior Taj Benton (Baltimore) opened the day with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay, clocking in at 1:31.79.

Individually, Stevens and sophomore Adam Diaz (Manhattan, N.Y.) took first (50.62) and second (53.30), respectively, in the 100 Back.

Johnson took home gold in the 100 Breast (57.96) while fellow classmate Tai Afrik (Holland, Mich.) earned first place in the 200-IM (1:57.70) and 100 Free (47.18).

Benton won the 100 Fly with a time of 49.79.

Juniors Darien Williams (Philadelphia) and Daren Rodgers (Chicago) finished first (21.19) and second (21.91), respectively, in the 50 Free.

Sophomore Mason Green (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and third-year Bison Ty Triche (Humble, Texas) claimed gold (1:43.91) and silver (1:47.63), respectively, in the 200 Free.

Afrik, Benton, Rodgers and Stevens finished the day victorious in the 200 Free Relay (1:18.96).

On the board, freshman Zion Wilson (San Antonio) won the 1-meter (222.25 points) and 3-meter (224.15 points) dives.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic women’s swimming & diving team wrapped up the regular season with a dual meet at Howard on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals recorded nine top-10 finishes for a final score of 49-184.

Maura Sadowski led the way with a silver medal in the 500 free and a bronze medal in the 200 free. She clocked a 2:02.31 in the shorter distance before touching in the 5:26.94 distance event.

Madison Gozdan placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.17. Molly Foltz also recorded a runner-up finish with a 11:06.80 in the 1000 free.

Other notable finishes included a third-place finish by Emily Blaskovich in the 50 free (25.96), a third-place finish in the 100 back by Emily Albans (1:02.51), and two fourth-place finishes by Tara Wiarda in the 100 fly (1:03.06) and the 200 IM (2:20.64).

The Cardinals will end the season with the Landmark Conference Championships hosted at Loyola in Baltimore, Md. The four-day meet will begin on Thursday, February 13.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two Cardinals earned first-place finishes on Saturday as the Catholic men’s swimming and diving team closed out the regular season with a dual meet at Howard. The Cardinals scored 63 points to the Bison’s 179.

Sean Kelty earned the Cardinal’s first gold medal of the day in the 1000 free. He clocked a time of 10:09.54 to beat the rest of the field by over eight seconds.

Shawn Mashburn joined Kelty in the winner’s column with a victory in the 500 free. He reached the wall in 4:56.31 to just out touch his competitor from Howard.

Jackson Hicks was the only Cardinal to earn a runner-up finish. He placed second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.34.

Four events saw Catholic record third-place finishes. Jack Thompson clocked a 48.51 in the 100 free and a 21.98 in the 50 free, Vincent Wills finished in 53.06 in the 100 fly, and Hicks notched another top-three finish in the 200 IM with a 2:02.64.

Catholic has two weeks off before returning to the pool for the Landmark Conference Championships from February 15-18. The four-day meet will occur at the Mangione Aquatic Center in Baltimore, Md.
