UMass Amherst Sweeps Fordham On Senior Day

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving team came out on top on Senior Day over Atlantic 10 foe Fordham University on Saturday at the Joseph R. rogers Jr., Pool. The Minutewomen won 151.5-148.5 over the Rams, while the Minutemen took down the Rams, 177.7-119.5.

The Minutewomen saw six first places on the day, while the Minutemen grabbed 10 gold medals on the afternoon. Junior Sammy Quigg collected three gold medals on the day.

Women’s Swimming & Diving

The Minutewomen totaled 27 top three finishes on the day to go along, while collecting six gold medals.

Sophomore Sophie Porter and junior Lexi Alexen kicked off the individual events with a first and second-place finish, respectively, in the 500 freestyle. Porter finished with a season-best time of 5:11.67, while Alexen swam a time of 5:19.47. The 200 freestyle saw freshman Elizabeth Lahmann take second with a time of 1:54.51 with fellow classmate Hannah Schoenauer close behind in third with a time of 1:54.72.

In the 100 breaststroke, graduate student Bri Williams claimed second with a time of 58.63, as senior Hannah McIver finished third with a time of 59.94. Sophomore Lindsay Burbage touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.99 and freshman Kendall Gilbert placed third with a personal-best time of 1:06.78.

The Minutewomen swept the podium in the 200 butterfly with senior Anna Kwon (2:07.22) in first, senior Lauren Stott (2:08.48) in second and graduate student Ashley Calderon (2:08.76) in third. Freshman Courtney Tedesco was second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.64, while fellow classmate Karinne Everly placed third with a time of 25.09. The 100 freestyle saw Everly claim the silver medal with a time of 53.90, as Lahmann took the bronze with a time of 53.95.

Freshman Maria Grishaeva was second with a time of 2:08.19 in the 200 backstroke, while Burbage finished second with a season-best time of 1:00.69 in the 100 individual medley. Calderon grabbed the gold medal in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.40 and Stott finished third with a time of 58.76. Schoenauer (2:08.69) claimed second and sophomore Diya Ackerman-Vallala (2:10.59) took third in the 200 individual medley.

In the relays, the team of Williams, Burbage, Calderon and Tedesco combined for a time of 1:46.25 in the 200 medley relay to finish first, while the team of Grishaeva, Gilbert, Kwon and Lahmann placed third with a time of 1:48.14. The 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Lahmann, Tedesco, Everly and Kwon secured the silver medal with a time of 3:35.15.

Men’s Swimming & Diving

The Minutemen earned 10 first-place finishes of their own and added 29 top-three finishes.

Sophomore Jude Boukarroum (4:43.65) and freshman Daniel Strumidlo (4:46.60) finished in first and second, respectively, in the 500 freestyle to begin the individual events for the men’s team. Quigg picked up the gold in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.63, while sophomore Cole Brooks earned the bronze with a time of 1:43.56 in the event.

Freshman Zach Szabo (51.97) and senior Beau Bengston (52.08) placed second and third, respectively, in the 100 backstroke, as freshman Nate Derby swam into second-place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.71. Sophomore Aydin Erkan sat atop the podium in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:52.71.

Quigg touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.76 and junior Aidan Shepston took third with a time of 21.33 in the event. The 100 freestyle saw Quigg secure his third gold medal of the afternoon, swimming a time of 45.23, followed by Strumidlo tying for third with a time of 47.80.

In the 200 backstroke, freshman Chase Keeler claimed second with a time of 1:52.71 with Brooks close behind in third with a personal-best time of 1:56.16. Bengston swam into third with a season-best time of 54.33 in the 100 individual medley.

Senior Grant Beebe (49.97) finished first in the 100 butterfly, as Shepston (51.73) was third in the event. Keeler (1:57.82) and Derby (1:58.92) completed the individual events with a second- and third-place finish in the 200 individual medley.

During the relay events, the team of Bengston, Derby, Beebe and Shepston combined for a time of 1:33.01 to sit atop the podium, while Szabo, sophomore Alonso Montori, freshman Liam Rayson and Brooks were third with a time of 1:36.54. The 400 freestyle relay saw the team of Shepston, Rayson, Montori and Quigg come out on top with a time of 3:06.25, as the team consisting of Beebe, Brooks, Strumidlo and Bengston placed third with a time of 3:10.28.

On The Boards
In the one-meter event, freshman Khrystyna Yaremyn placed second with a six-dive total of 248.48. The three-meter dive saw two Minutewomen claim the top two spots on the podium. Yaremyn secured first with a score of 270.60 with freshman Danielle Guerin picking up the silver with a total of 267.75.

The Minutemen swept the podium in order for both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Junior Andrew Bell (394.65) was first, freshman Alex Kreidler (297.98) was second and freshman Gavin Buttram (250.05) was third in the one-meter dive. Bell earned the gold in the three-meter with a season-best matching total of 429.23, followed by Kreidler in second with a personal-best score of 330.60 and Buttram in third with a personal-best total of 281.33. Kreidler’s three-meter score of 330.60 became the program’s seventh best all-time mark.

Amherst, Mass. – (February 1, 2025) – The Fordham swimming & diving team had their final dual meet of the season on Saturday, as the Rams headed up to Amherst, Massachusetts for a dual meet with UMass.

UMass got the better of the Rams, as they edged out the women, 151.5-148.5, and the men, 177.5-119.5.

On the women’s side, Fordham won 10 events on the day, led by Ainhoa Martin, who won three events on the day.  She took first in the 200 freestyle (1:54.38), 200 breaststroke (2:18.05), and 200 individual medley (2:06.98).  She was also a part of the winning 400 freestyle relay team with Jessica ZebrowskiHope Nolan, and Emma Shaughnessy, which clocked in at 3:33.90.

Zebrowski would also win multiple events, taking the top spot in the 50 (24.41) and 100 (52.64) freestyle events, while Shaughnessy won the 100 individually medley (1:00.34).

Leire Martin swept the backstroke events, taking first in 57.79 seconds (100) and 2:02.39 (200), with Mya Bokerman winning the one-meter dive with a score of 250.80.

On the men’s side, the Rams won six events on the day, headed up by Daniel Ribeiro winning both the 100 backstroke (50.72) and the 100 individual medley (51.84).

David TopiChristian TaylorRyan Hong, and Noah Althoff each won one event.  Topi grabbed first in the 100 breaststroke at 57.31 seconds, while Taylor won the 200 backstroke in 1:52.20.  Hong took the top spot in the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.35 with Althoff finished first in the 200 individual medley in 1:57.06.

The Rams now set their sights on the 2025 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship to be held February 19-22 at the Hampton Virginia Aquaplex in Hampton, Virginia.
