Holy Cross Women Win Sixth Straight, Men Third Consecutive Worcester City Championship

WORCESTER, Mass. – For the sixth straight year, the Holy Cross women’s swimming and diving team won the Worcester City Championship on Saturday hosted by WPI in the Sports & Recreation Center.

Holy Cross kept the Callie Taffe trophy on The Hill scoring 1,127 points and the top slot. Assumption (661), WPI (657), and Clark (308) rounded out the field. The Crusaders six consecutive championships started back in 2018-19, continued in 2019-20, and had a break in competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020-21 before winning in 2021-22, 2022-23 and last year (2023-24).

Sophomore Devin Brindle earned the Cathy Desrosiers Award given to the Female Swimmer of the Meet. Brindle set two individual meet records in the 100-yard freestyle (53.57) and the 100-yard butterfly (58.15). Brindle smashed another mark in the 400-yard medley relay (3:59.08) with freshman Laura Arciniegas, freshman Natalie Neno and junior Ainsley Nalen.

Arciniegas established two individual meet records leading off the medley relay with the 100-yard backstroke (59.01). She also had the new mark in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.64). Nalen (200-yard freestyle, 1:56.56) and freshman Ellie Reinhart (100-yard backstroke, 59.11) also established new meet marks.

Newcomer Brenna Short brought home the Beth Ferraro Award for the Female Diver of the Meet. Short broke the Holy Cross and meet record in the one-meter dive at 292.70 which was another NCAA Zone cut.

The Crusaders will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 21 for the first day of the Harold Anderson Invitational hosted by Rhode Island.

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s swimming and diving brought home their third consecutive Worcester City Championship on Saturday competing at WPI’s Sports & Recreation Center.

Holy Cross tallied 1,071 points while fellow City of the Seven Hills schools WPI (941), Assumption (412) and Clark (247) rounded out the field. The Crusaders won The Paul Parenteau trophy for the third straight season following a 10-year drought.
Junior Jack Greiner earned the Justin Ferris Award given to the Male Swimmer of the Meet. Greiner smashed three Worcester City Championship individual records in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:46.47), the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.82) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.77).

He was also part of the 400-yard medley relay team (3:30.76) with classmate Zach Bubonovich, senior Rory Hess and freshman Peter Mottolese and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:10.13) squad with sophomore Will Clark, Mottolese and sophomore Jake Thompson.

Clark had two new meet marks in the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay (1:27.18) with Bubonovich, junior Chris Villani and freshman Lucas Golembiewski.

Freshman Griffin Casey, the reigning Patriot League Male Diver of the Week picked up the Whit Griffith Award for the Male Diver of the Meet. The newcomer placed first in the one-meter dive (302.60) and on the three-meter board (312.85) setting new meet marks and earning an NCAA Zone cut on the one-meter board.

The Crusaders will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 21 for the first day of the Harold Anderson Invitational hosted by Rhode Island.
