A New Year means new competition, but old rivalries. The Yale men faced off against Ivy League rival Cornell as the Bulldogs brought home the win. The Bulldog men beat Cornell with a score of 181-119. Going into this season, we knew to expect big things from the freshman class of Yale and they continue to put up big numbers for their school, capturing first place finishes to show the Ivy League they aren’t a class to mess with. The majority of races won were won with times faster than that of last year’s same meet. This proves Yale’s progress into the later part of their season.

Andrew Heymann went three for three in his events during this meet. His win the Yale A-relay in the 200 medley relay with a 1:32.51 brought in major points and he only continued to bring in points for the team. He won the men’s 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.80 and dominated the 200 breaststroke as he show cased his strong front half speed and won with a time of 2:02.46. His upperclassman strength continues to shine through as the Bulldogs head into their championship season and hopefully will drive this team to bigger and better things.
Teammate Alwin Firmansyah accompanied Heymann on the winning A-relay but also brought in individual points in his races. With his win in the 200 IM of 1:51.55 and second place finish in the 50 freestyle of 20.90, he accumulated 13 points individually and holds individual records for the Bulldogs in the 200 fly and the 200 IM. With a solid taper, we can expect a nice time drop as the championship season arrises.
Representing the stunning Yale freshman class in a big way was Oscar Miao as he also went three for three on his events. In the 200 medley relay, he played anchor and his freestyle speed carried him through the 50 freestyle later in the meet where he placed first with a time of 20.83. His presence was missed in the 100 freestyle though. Miao lead off the winning Yale A-relay in the 400 freestyle relay that wrapped up the meet with a time of 3:06.23.
Cornell senior Ben Catanese made a great impact for the Brown Bears as he individually placed first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:50.65. In the 100 fly he placed second with a time of 51.53 and helped the Cornell B-relay take third in the 200 medley relay with his strong butterfly leg.
In the 200 medley relay, the Yale A-relay of Aaron Greenberg, Heymann, Firmansyah, and Miao took first. Second place was the Yale B-relay of Kevin Stang, Alex Goss, Ed Becker, and Victor Zhang with a time of 1:34.98. Third place was the Cornell B-relay of Willie Mendelson, Eric May, Catanese, and Tim Satterthwaite with a time of 1:35.25.
Yale Junior Rob Harder took first in the 1000 freestyle with a 9:30.37 while second place went to Taylor Wilson of Cornell with a 9:33.87 and trailing just behind him was Will Yang with a time of 9:33.96.
Brian Hogan and Pat Killian took first and second for Yale in the 200 free with respective times of 1:41.16 and 1:44.10. Third place was Ryan Walker of Cornell who was close behind with a 1:44.95. Walker’s front half was superior to Killian, but the Yale senior was able to pull through for a second place finish with a better back half.
Dylan Sali of Cornell took first place in the 100 back with a time of 51.19 as teammate Eric Kim took third with a time of 52.39. Second place was Stang from the Yale 200 medley B-relay with a 51.84.
In the 100 breaststroke, Heymann of the Yale 200 medley A-relay took first with a time of 56.80 as Victor Luo took second with a time of 57.08. Third place was May of the Cornell 200 medley B-relay with a 59.05.
Catanese took first for Cornell in the 200 fly with a time of 1:50.65 as Ben Lerude took second for Yale with a time of 1:51.51. Alex Schultz, another Yale freshman, took third with a time of 1:52.43.
A new set of faces show up in the 100 free that didn’t make their appearance in the 50 free as Greenberg took first with a time of 46.45. Cornell senior Harry Harpham took second with a 47.58 as third place went to Killian with a 47.90.
In the 200 breaststroke, Heymann shut down the field early with his strong front speed and final time of 2:02.46 was good for first place. Second place was Luo with a time of 2:03.98. Liam Sosinsky took third with a time of 2:08.82.
In the 100 butterfly, Yale junior Michael Reynolds took first with a time of 50.96 as Catanese took second with a time of 51.53. Schultz took third with a 51.92.
The Yale A-relay of Miao, Hogan, Killian, and Harder took first in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:06.23. Second place was the Cornell A-relay of Wilson, Kevin Kreher, Jack Bremer, and Satterthwaite with a time of 3:10.35.
