Dare Rose is the 2023 National Champion in the 100 fly. He is a 2x NCAA team champion with the Cal bears.
High School
Dare was a stand-out swimmer from a young age, breaking the 11-12 NAG in the 200m fly in a time of 2:11.85. He went on to break the 13-14 NAG in the 200m freestyle in 1:53.30.
On SwimSwam’s Way Too Early rankings for the Class of 2020, Rose was labeled as “One to Watch”. On the official rankings for the class, Rose came in at #20. On the Re-rank for the class, Rose was an Honorable Mention.
On January 17, 2019, Rose announced his verbal commitment to Cal.
College (Cal)
2020-21
As a freshman, Rose made an immediate impact for the bears. At the Pac-12 Championships, Rose was a 3-event scorer, placing 13th in the 500 free (4:19.58), 13th in the 200 free (1:36.00), and 3rd in the 200 fly (1:42.13).
At his first NCAAs, Rose scored in the B-final of the 200 fly, placing 14th overall (1:42.83).
2021-22
Rose continued to improve through his sophomore season. At Pac-12s, he placed 4th in the 100 fly (45.42) and 3rd in the 200 fly (1:41.36) and tied for 21st in the 50 free prelims (19.79). At the NCAA Champs, Rose placed 13th in the 100 fly (45.37) and 12th in the 200 fly (1:41.23).
2022-23
During his junior year, Rose contributed individually and on relays at the Pac-12 and NCAA champs. At Pac-12s, he placed 6th in the 100 fly (45.51) and 4th in the 200 fly (1:41.83) as well as swam on Cal’s 2nd place 400 medley relay.
At NCAAs, Rose placed 10th in the 100 fly (44.75) and 4th in the 200 fly (1:39.89) as well as split 19.85 on Cal’s 4th place 200 medley relay.
National/International Competition
2018 Jr Pan Pacific Championships
Rose competed for the first time representing the USA in Suva, Fiji, as a part of the Jr Pan Pac team. In Suva, Rose swam the 3rd leg of the gold medal 800 free relay, splitting 1:49.04.
2021 Olympic Trials
Rose swam 3 events in Omaha, placing 30th in the 100 fly and 200 fly as well as 41st in the 200 free.
2023 National Championships
Rose had a career meet in Indianapolis at the 2023 world champ trials. He started in the 200 fly on night 1, where he placed 10th overall (2nd in the B-Final) in 1:55.93, his first time under 1:56. The next night, he placed 2nd in the 50 fly in another best of 23.20. On night 3, Rose won the 100 fly in a best of 50.74, qualifying him for his first world championships team.
2023 World Aquatics Championships (Fukuoka, Japan)
Rose cruised through prelims with a 23.27 of the 50 fly in a remarkable 4-way tie for 9th. In semis, he was all business with a monstrous 22.79 for 2nd in semis, just back of Maxime Grousset’s 22.72. The swim ties him with Michael Andrew for the #2 American all-time behind Caeleb Dressel. Rose placed sixth in the 50 fly final in a time of 23.01, though his 22.79 from semi-finals would have taken silver.
In the 100 fly, he cruised through prelims again with a 51.17 before dropping the hammer in the semis in 50.53. The time was a new PB and made him the #5 performer in American history. Earlier, he had split 50.50 on the prelims relay of the mixed 400 medley relay that went to get bronze in the final. In the final, Rose was even better with a 50.46. Over the course of this summer, he’s chopped .94 seconds off his best time. Rose was great on the 400 Medley relay where he split 50.13 as the Americans broke the meet record and Rose netted his first gold of the meet.
