The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) hosted their annual National Open Water Championships this past weekend in Miami, Florida. Rice came out on top of the team standings on the women’s side, while Cincinnati topped the men’s. The top five men’s and women’s finishers are given the opportunity to compete at the 2023 USA Swimming 5k Open Water National Championships next spring.

All told, the CSCAA reported that almost 250 student-athletes from more than 40 schools across all three NCAA Divisions participated in the event. The CSCAA and Florida International University have announced that they will be hosting the event again in Miami next year. This is a shift from previous years, as the event has typically been hosted by the University of Kansas, but was timed to be held before most schools started the official season in September.

In the men’s race, Raul Briceno from Mars Hill University beat out Northern Michigan’s Ondrej Zach by just over three seconds, clocking a 54:37.54. Zach, who won last year’s race by a 4 minute margin, clocked a 54:40.87. Ido Gal was Cincinnati’s top finisher, placing third with a 54:45.46. The top three athletes were the only ones under the 55:00 minute mark.

On the women’s side, Rice freshman Ella Dyson won the individual title with a 58:08.88, just three seconds ahead of Northwestern’s Lola Mull (58:11.35). Kaitlin Gravell from Villanova rounded out the top three just behind Mull with a 58:17.20.
