BERKELEY – Senior Jack Deely had a nine-point game and sophomore Jordi Gascon came off the bench to register a career-high four goals, and the No. 1 Cal men’s water polo team got by No. 13 UC San Diego 19-15 on Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Sophomore Roberto Valera and freshman Albert Ponferrada each added two goals and four assists for the Bears (6-0), who scored three goals in a row bridging the third and fourth quarter to give themselves some breathing room against the Tritons.
Deely had four goals and five assists and Cal registered 11 steals as a team.
The Bears never trailed but UCSD stayed within two goals throughout the first half, and Cal led 10-9 at halftime. The Bears scored the first two goals of the second half but the Tritons stayed within striking distance until Cal’s late run made the difference.
The Bears will finish off a busy weekend in Berkeley when they host No. 9 Pepperdine on Sunday at 1 p.m.
