Lobos Win All 14 Events Against UTPB and Adams State

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Lobo seniors Mari Aoki, Raine Gavino and Jordan Hartley swam the first three legs of the opening event, the 400-yard medley relay, leading UNM to a convincing win, getting the Lobos off to a perfect start.

They never slowed down either.

The Lobos swept all 14 swimming events, taking the top two spots to defeat UT-Permian Basic 170-103 and Adams State, which didn’t bring a full squad, 170-19.

Aoki was a part of three wins, with the relay, the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke.  Hartley won the 200-yard butterfly and was second to Marina Olmstead in the 100-yard butterfly, while Gavino was second in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke to teammate Kianna Raagas.

Other winners included Olmstead and Wilson twice and Gracie Moylan, Olivia Bishop and Maddie Deucher.  Wilson, Deucher, Jordan Foster and Brynn Quintana all teamed up for the final win, the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The wins pushed UNM to 5-3 a year after missing the entire season due to the pandemic.

No diving competition was held as UNM’s diving squad competed at Northern Arizona in the NAU Diving Invitational.  There, Alex Robertson finished 10^th in the 1-meter with Hannah Tiendas 15^th and Daphne Scheck 18^th.  The NAU Diving Invitational continues Saturday and Sunday.

The team will next compete at the Mountain West Championships February 17-20 in College Station, Texas.

UT Permian Basin Women’s Swim and Dive came ready to compete in their final meet before the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships in two weeks.  In a tri-meet, the Falcons were just behind Division I’s University of New Mexico while the cruised to a victory over Division II opponent Adams State.

Kathe Hepfer took both the one- and three-meter diving competitions for the Falcons.  Competing against a DI opponent, the Falcons had 17 top three finishes in 16 events.  Jazzy Tscherne had a shot at the 100 backstroke, finishing just four seconds off the lead after a slower second split.  Olivia Blackman picked up the team’s first second place finish of the day after a string of third place finishes.  In the 200 butterfly she just beat out teammate Marcela Hernandez Flores by a single second.

In the 50 freestyle, Kristina Vujosevic was two seconds off the lead in a tight final heat.  Ava Reume came close to pulling off the upset in the 100 freestyle but finished third.  She had the third fastest split of any of the competitors in the event.  Tshcerne and Sophia Ortiz took second and third in the 200 backstroke while Ana Cardenas Guerra finished second in the 500 freestyle.  The Falcons came close to the upset in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing less than two seconds in back of the host Lobos.

Adams State was slated to compete against the Falcon men.  They did not travel so the men did not score in the meet.

ALAMOSA, Colo. — The Adams State Grizzlies hit the road as they take on University of New Mexico and University of Texas Permian Basin.

Only the Adams State Women’s swim team traveled to the meet. Peyton Schwartz got in fifth place with a time of 1:05.01 in the Women’s 50 Yard Breaststroke. Ryan Bustos came in right after her with a time of 1:10.12. In the 100 Yard Freestyle, Kyler James had a final time of 1:01.04, which landed her in 6th place. James also got in 4th place in the Women’s 100 Yard Butterfly with a final time of 1:05.49. The relay team placed in 4th place with a time of 1:52.28.

Up next, the Grizzlies are on the road as they compete in the RMAC championships in Grand Junction on February 9th.
