Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak announced last night that the state would move into Phase 2 of its plan to reopen businesses shuttered by COVID-19. As of Friday, the state’s pools can open their doors back up.
Sisolak had scheduled a press conference for Tuesday night to announce whether the state would move to the next step in its reopening process. But The Nevada Independent reports that the press conference was abruptly canceled when Sisolak’s office announced that he may have been exposed to COVID-19 during a workplace visit the week prior. Instead of a press conference, Sisolak released prepared remarks Tuesday night.
As the state moves to Phase 2, gyms and pools across the state are allowed to open beginning this Friday, May 29. Pools must operate at no higher than 50% capacity, and gyms are required to close locker rooms, showers, steam rooms and communal facilities.
Nevada also allowed youth sports to reopen, though the details on that are still forthcoming. Other businesses coming back in Phase 2: bars (at 50% capacity), salons, spas, museums, movie theaters and indoor malls.
The state’s casinos are targeting a June 4 date to return to operation, and Sisolak said he was confident in that reopening date.
While the governor’s decision allows clubs across the state to potentially return, clubs will still be bound by local authorities as well as facilities. At least one major Nevada club, the Sandpipers of Nevada, has already announced that it will be returning to practice, though no official schedule or protocols are complete yet.
