Another pair of Northwestern Pool Records fell on the 2nd day of competition. Hannah Brunzell, a Northwestern freshman who won the 200 IM on day one, sped to a new lifetime best 59.76 on the way to winning the women’s 100 breast. Brunzell broke the Pool Record with her prelims time of 59.84, and lowered it again in finals. Northwestern teammate Calypso Sheridan, who is most notably a top 400 IM’er in the NCAA, came in 2nd with a lifetime best 1:00.00. Sheridan also swam a stunnigly tight race, splitting 29.08 going out and 30.92 coming home. Northwestern also picked up 3rd and 4th place finishes from Sophie Angus (1:00.58), and Tara Vovk (1:02.26).

Calypso Sheridan went on to win the women’s 100 fly in a personal best 52.69. That time also broke the Northwestern Pool Record, while runner-up Kate Afanasyeva also came in under the Pool Record with her time of 52.90. Miriam Guevara of Northwestern won the B final in 53.44, also breaking the Pool Record which stood at 53.55.

Sheridan Notably did not compete in her top event, the 400 IM. In her absence, Northwestern freshman Ally Larson held down the fort, clocking a 4:14.76 to win the race by 5 seconds. Larson, who had only swum the 400 IM once before entering the NCAA, a 5:14.87 when she was 14, has now risen to 9th in the Big Ten conference this year. Larson wasn’t done there, however, leading off the Northwestern ‘A’ 800 free relay off in 1:46.93. That time shredded Larson’s previous best time of 1:51.98, and Northwestern then went on to win the relay. Malorie Han was next in (1:50.16), Lara (1:50.80), and Ilektra Lebl (1:48.93), finishing in 7:16.82 for the win.

Krystal Lara won the women’s 200 free for Northwestern by 2 seconds, swimming a 1:47.76. Lara swam a 1:46.66 at the SMU Classic last month, which stands 5th in the Big ten this year. Lara also swam a 53.48 to win the women’s 100 back.

Collyn Gagne of Simon Fraser posted a dominant win in th men’s 400 IM, clocking a 3:47.36. Gagne roared hom last night, splitting 52.33 on the free leg of the race. Simon Fraser also picked up a win in the men’s 100 fly, where Amar Fejzic swam a 48.32.

Ogi Maric (UNLV) won the men’s 200 free as well last night, swimming a 1:35.77 to touch first by over 2 seconds. Maric swam a consistent race, splitting 24.28, 24.59, and 24.87 on the last 3 50s. Maric swam the fastest split in the field on each 50 of the race.

Northwestern won the last 2 individual men’s events: the 100 back and 100 breast. Bacarizo Martos won the 100 back in a new season best 47.29. Freshman Kevin Hosueman won the 100 breast in a new best time of 53.15, winning the race by over 2 seconds.
