Watch: Lochte, Franklin, Jones Talk Cross Training, Taper For Omaha

Produced by Coleman Hodges.

Today at the Speedo Fit launch event in New York City, we caught up with Missy Franklin, Cullen Jones, and Ryan Lochte to talk about their next two months leading into the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha June 26th through July 3rd.

None of the three would divulge their exact Olympic Trials schedules, although we can probably make a pretty good guess at Jones’s at the very least, but they did talk about their taper and focus heading into the Trials.

Jones mentioned that as he gets older, he likes to do a “heavier” taper for Trials, with less rest in the weight room and more in the pool.

Both Franklin and Lochte said that they will not be fully tapering for Omaha, showing that their focus is already on the Olympics.

However, as countries throughout the world hold their own Olympic Trials, Franklin said that she is still keeping her sights set nationally.

“The hardest part is going to be making the team, and that’s what we need to do, and once we’re able to do that, and we have the opportunity to represent our country again, then we can start worrying about our other competition internationally,” she said.

Ryan Murphy 1:52:00?
That got me cracking.

The hardest thing is to make the US team??? Really ……….Clearly some in the US team are going to receive one hell of a shock come Rio.

Katie Hoff received a rude awakening in Rio despite being the golden girl at the 2008 trials. She was soundly beaten by her rivals in all her key events. History has a nasty way of repeating itself

The ludicrous reasoning some people put forward here rarely disappoints.
OK, so I agree, …..history DOES have a nasty way of repeating itself. How about this bit of history…
2012 31 medals
2008 31 medals (year Katie Hoff “soundly beaten,” according to @BAD ANON)
2004 28 medals
2000 33 medals
1996 26 medals
So you’re saying that history WILL repeat, right?

My example on Hoff remains pertinent to this day. The hype around US Olympic trials is something to behold. However Olympic medals aren’t won at trials. The notion that trials are more cut throat than the Olympics themselves is something i tend to disagree with

Hoff situation is pertinent with respect to what, exactly?

Her performance at the Games is notable as an exception rather than the rule. Whether or not the US Trials are in fact more “cut throat” or not is not an argument worth having – frankly, who cares? The fact is that this belief (whether justified or not) has not, on the whole, hurt the US Swim performance in the Games. If anything, it might be helping.

Overall, US performances in the Games have been noteworthy for consistently meeting, if not exceeding, very high expectations. This is measurably reflected in the medal performance history I provided – Olympiad after Olympiad, decade after decade. Who else has consistently done better, in… Read more »

Missy is adorable and she is cool with her fans.
But I think she does too many things for her sponsors and for the media.
She travels a lot and it means many days of training less.
She spends much energy outside of the pool before trials and olympic games.
She should learn to say no sometimes.

And about trials, yes, the key is to qualify without a full taper. If you want to shine at olympic games of course. If you want to go to Rio as a tourist, that’s different. 😆

I do not think Jones will make it. He will have to be a sub 21.5 and I think a sub 48.5 just for a relay spot

Lochte can easily make the 200 IM and grab a spot on the 4 x 200 relay. I don’t think he will have a shot in the 200 back without a full taper. Murphy will be a 1:52 and Clary and Pebley will be 1:54’s. I think Lochte will go for 400 IM and grab a spot. Lochte will swim 2 individual and one relay event at Rio.

I think Franklin will get a birth in the free relays, but fail to qualify individually in either individual free event. I think she will… Read more »

“Franklin will get a birth in the free relays”

Yikes! Maybe that’s why she’s not swimming well.

I was thinking the same thing. Also concerned about how the compression of a tech suit will affect the baby.

No taper, no team. Good bye Rio.

Then you can scratch Phelps off the Rio entry list. No way he does full taper for Trials.

I’m somberly worried about Cullen Jones’ chances. If Adrian and Dressel are guns blazing he won’t make the 50 top two. The 100free top 6 will be crapshoot. Jones hasn’t been sub 49 in a while. At Pan Ams he wasn’t too impressive
