As part of the final push of publicity for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which run just after the Olympic Games in the same venues, the International Paralympic Committee has released a new marketing campaign revolving around the idea of “The Training that Changes Opinions.”
In the videos, famous Paralympic athletes go to their local gyms to work out – and throughout the video, the local gymgoers’ expressions go from uncertain discomfort to stunned amazement when they see first-hand the training regimens of these world class athletes. The video closes with the idea of “when you see a Paralympic athlete up close, words can’t explain it.”
The video organizers say that they didn’t intend for this to be a social experiment, rather they wanted to show the reality of being a Paralympic athlete, and the assumptions and ensuing astonishment that comes from being a judoka who is blind or a runner who has only one leg.
The Paralympic Games run from September 7th-18th, with swimming being hosted at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium from September 8th to 17th.
