Ana Menéndez, one of Spain’s top breaststrokers, has made a verbal commitment to the University of South Carolina for the 2016-17 season. Menéndez swims under coach Pablo Álvarez at Real Grupo de Cultura Covadonga in the Asturian region of Spain. She finished the 2015 long course season ranked top-5 for Spain in each of the three breaststroke events: the 50, 100, and 200. Her best long course times (converted to short course yards) are:

  • 50m breast – 32.73 (28.58)
  • 100m breast – 1:10.78 (1:01.96)
  • 200m breast – 2:32.59 (2:13.86)

Menéndez, who has been crowned both Youth National Champion and Junior National Champion in Spain in the 100m breast, has been representing Spain since she was 13. In 2012 she was selected to the youth team competing in the Comen Cup, where she won a bronze medal in the 4x100m free with Africa Zamorano, Carmen Rico and Elisa Sanchez. She also placed eighth in the 100m breast and sixth in the 200m breast at the meet.

Menéndez is still quite young; she won’t turn 17 until November 19. Nevertheless, she still would have posted the Gamecocks’ top times for the 2015-16 season, and been South Carolina’s lone scorer in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes at the 2015 SEC Championships.
