Kristyn Popowski, who swims for Greater Holyoke National YMCA Viking Swim Team and Holyoke Catholic High School in Chicopee, Massachusetts, verbally committed to swim for the University of Massachusetts yesterday.
A YMCA Nationals qualifier in both short course yards and long course meters, Popowski is primarily a distance free specialist, although she has also had a good deal of success in the fly and IM as well. At the 2015 MIAA Division 2 Girls State Championships, Popowski placed fifth in the 100 fly (59.94) and fourth in the 500 free (5:08:88), and she was the butterfly leg on Holyoke Catholic’s 200 medley relay and the anchor of the 400 free relay.
Popowski’s best times are:
SCY | LCM | |
200 free | 1:55.27 | 2:16.83 |
500/400 free | 5:00.99 | 4:37.00 |
1000/800 free | 10:14.03 | 9:21.01 |
1650/1500 free | 17:04.79 | 17:43.00 |
100 fly | 59.46 | 1:09.22 |
200 fly | 2:07.89 | 2:24.04 |
200 IM | 2:11.69 | 2:31.73 |
400 IM | 4:31.85 | 5:09.90 |
Popowski’s top 500/1000/1650 freestyle times would have ranked second on UMass’ top-ten list for the 2014-15 season, while her 200 free, both flys, and both IMs would have made their respective top-tens as well.
UMass took second at the 2015 Atlantic-10 conference meet, 88 points behind Richmond. Popowski should help the Minutewomen score in the 1650, and with a little more improvement, in the 500 free, 200 fly and 400 IM.
