Mehdy Metella put on a show in the semi-finals of the men’s 100 butterfly on the sixth day of the 2015 FINA World Championships. The Frenchman qualified for finals with a new national record time of 51.39, taking down Clément Lefert’s national record from 2009.
Lefert established the previous national record of 51.42 at the 2009 French Championships. More records fell in 2009 than any other year in history due to the use of the now-banned technical suits. Lefert’s record stood for nearly six and half years.
Metella is sitting in sixth headed into tomorrow’s men’s 100 butterfly final. His time of 51.39 is only .36 behind the leader and .28 out of the top 3. The men’s 100 butterfly is one of the tightest finals of the meet, with the top eight all within .48 seconds of each other.
