Brazilian sprinter Graciele Hermann has scratched from the 2014 Short Course World Championships, where she was scheduled to swim the 50 free, plus the 400 free relay.
According to bestswimming.com.br, Hermann pulled out after swimming at the South American Championships last week. At that meet, Hermann won both the 50 free (25.47) and 100 free (55.76) in addition to golds in the 400 free and 400 medley relays.
Her replacement will be Daiane Becker, who swam to 24.95 and 54.60 in short course meters at the Jose Finkel trial meet. Becker was scheduled to have gone to the 2010 World Short Course Championships, but failed a doping test that earned her a two-year suspension.
No reason was given for Hermann’s withdrawal.
The 22-year old from Rio Grande do Sul bring high hopes to the Brazilians of raising Brazilian women’s sprinting to the heights of the men’s group. That hope is partially based, in fact, upon her height – at 5’11,” Hermann towers over most of the best Brazilian female sprinters of the last decade.
