The teams have dropped for the men’s 4×200 free final tonight, and as expected there are wholesale changes from the heats this morning.
Three of the four medal contenders have swapped out three of their four legs. Favorites Australia retain Ed Sommerville, who split 1:46.16 this morning, and bring in Sam Short on the leadoff, Harrison Turner on the second leg and Kai Taylor on the anchor.
England keep Max Litchfield on the anchor leg, a potentially surprising order given that they have James Guy in the quartet. He will swim third, with Tom Dean second and Gabriel Shepherd on the leadoff after he set a PB on the leadoff in the mixed 4×100 free heats yesterday.
Scotland keep their middle legs from this morning but shift them a spot forward. George Smith leads off after splitting 1:48.65 this morning, with Matt Ward taking over. Evan Jones, who set a lifetime best of 1:46.50 in April, will dive in third before handing over the greatest 200 free relay swimmer of the last decade in Duncan Scott. A back-half strategy could see them swimming through the wash to make it to the podium.
Wales lead off with Matt Richards, as they did in the mixed 4×100 free last night, then swim Dan Jones, Kieran Bird, and Tyler Melbourne-Smith. Jones was also on the relay yesterday and set a lifetime best of 1:49.26 in April, as did Melbourne-Smith with a 1:46.67. Bird split 1:56.27 this morning but was clearly cruising, with Scotland ten seconds ahead as he dived in and no real race for second in the heat.
Malaysia and India keep their quartets intact, as do Jersey in Lane 1. The Cayman Islands team does not appear on the start sheets, but it seems unlikely that they would DNS the final. Their team this morning featured Connor MacDonald, Elijah Bain, Will Sellars, and James Allison.
The Isle of Man’s relay team was also blank before the men’s 4×100 free relay on day 1, and they did swim the final.
