The 2026 Commonwealth Games are nearly upon us, with the aquatic action kicking off Friday, July 24th from the storied Tollcross International Swimming Centre, site of the 2014 edition of the Games.
A lot has changed in the past 12 years for Australian Cameron McEvoy, the now 32-year-old father of one who claimed silver in the 50m freestyle in Glasgow.
McEvoy has since been building momentum using unconventional training methods with coach Tim Lane, culminating in the Aussie earning 50m free golds at both the 2023 and 2025 World Championships, with an Olympic between those two appearances at the 2024 Olympic Games.
Earlier this year, however, McEvoy surprised even himself by ripping a new World Record of 20.88 while competing in China, overtaking Brazilian Cesar Cielo‘s longstanding mark of 20.91 from 2009.
Now with the Commonwealth Games on the horizon, McEvoy recently spoke about a new training personal best, how he’s feeling entering the competition, as well as how the Aussie squad as a whole is shaping up in the pool.
“I clocked a training PB going out to 35 meters, which is really always what you want…four days off the back of a trip from Australia to Europe so I can’t complain, it’s awesome,” he said. “I didn’t do anything past 25 meters prior to my 20.88 [World Record], so I’m happy with where I am.
“I’ll touch base with technique, with sprinting, doing all that type of stuff, but the rest of it is, yeah, basically kicking back and relaxing and letting everything else kind of come up in its own time.”
McEvoy continued, “I’m just excited to see what the experience is like, what the venue is like now 12 years on.”
On his green and gold teammates, the speedster said, “The depth we have on the team right now is in credible. We have a lot of youngsters, a lot of rookies on the team that are ranking really well in the world. I’m looking ahead to Brisbane 2032 when they’ll, be entering their prime for a home Games.”
We’ve picked McEvoy to indeed win splash n’ dash gold but recognize that he still has the task of fending off the likes of fellow Aussies Jamie Jack and Flynn Southam, along with British Olympic multi-medalist Matt Richards and talented fly Olympic medalist Josh Liendo of Canada.
