New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Division I Championships runner-up John Landers has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Brown University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:

I am incredibly honored and thankful to be announcing my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Brown University to continue my athletic and academic career! I would first like to thank Coach Norman and Coach Tynan for this wonderful opportunity. I would also like to thank all of my coaches, Mont, Nick, Dave, and Ciec, for helping shape me into the person I am today. Thank you to all of my family, friends, and teammates who have pushed me and supported me all my life toward my goals. I cannot wait to get working, and I am so excited to see what the future holds. GO BRUNO!!!

A rising senior at Brunswick School in Greenwich, Connecticut, Landers has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming team since his freshman year. He also trains year-round with the Greenwich YWCA Dolphins, where he primarily specializes in sprint freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly.

Landers is coming off a 2025-26 short course season that saw him drop over four seconds in the 200 free, nearly five seconds in the 200 back, more than two and a half seconds in both the 100 back and 100 fly, just over half a second in the 100 free, and nearly half a second in the 50 free.

The future Bear finished as the runner-up in the 100 back (49.80) and fifth in the 50 free (20.97, 20.73* in prelims) at the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Division I Championships, both current personal bests. He also helped Brunswick to bronze in both the 200 medley relay (22.11 fly split) and 200 free relay (20.19 split), his first time cracking the top three at the meet in any event.

Landers set all of his other current best times across various club meets throughout the season: 50.01 in the 100 fly, 1:41.51 in the 200 free, and 1:51.04 in the 200 back at the PV NCAP Katie Ledecky Invitational in December, and 46.23 in the 100 free at the NC TEAM Sun-Kissed Jr/SR Champs in March.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 Freestyle: 20.73
  • 100 Freestyle: 46.23
  • 200 Freestyle: 1:41.51
  • 100 Backstroke: 49.80
  • 200 Backstroke: 1:51.04
  • 100 Butterfly: 50.01

A Division I program, Brown competes in the Ivy League Conference, with the men’s team placing sixth out of eight teams at this past season’s conference championships. To earn a second swim at the meet, times of 20.05, 44.02, and 1:40.38 were needed in the 50, 100, and 200 free, 48.86 and 1:49.01 in the 100 and 200 back, and 47.87 in the 100 fly, putting his current PBs outside the cutoffs, though he still has two full seasons of training ahead before his first conference meet.

Landers joins Matias Mejia, Alen Cindric, Ethan Landon, Henry Holtan, and Johnny Macko in committing to Brown’s class of 2031 so far.

*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
