Sean Niewold Clocks 22.69 Dutch Record In Men’s 50 Fly

2026 DUTCH EUROPEAN SWIMMING TRIALS

The 2026 Dutch European Swimming Trials kicked off today from Eindhoven and our first A-final of the evening session saw a new national record get established in the men’s 50m butterfly.

24-year-old Niewold fired off a lifetime best of 22.69 to take the decisive victory, hitting the sole time of the field under the 23-second barrier.

Thomas Verhoeven was next to the wall in 23.38, as Great Britain’s Kieran Grant rounded out the podium in 23.47.

As for Niewold, the former University of Alabama swimmer’s outing erased the former Dutch benchmark of 22.72 Nyls Korstanje put on the books at the 2025 AP Race London.

We reported how Korstanje opted out of this competition, instead focusing on getting his body back to form after having suffered an injury.

Entering this competition, Niewold’s 50m fly lifetime best checked in at the 22.94 produced at the Pro Swim Series in Sacramento this past May. That represented his first-ever foray under the 23-second threshold.

He already lowered that PB down to 22.82 to take the top seed out of this morning’s heats, before landing on the 22.69 notched for the gold medal.

Niewold now ranks #2 in the world, tying Canada’s Ilya Kharun, in a time which would have topped the podium at the 2024 European Championships.

Only tangentially related but it just occured to me that Milak has to be the only one in the sub 1:51/50/23 200/100/50 fly club (or the sub 1:52/50/23 club because nobody other than him has been sub 1:51 in the 200).

The statement still holds if you change sub 1:52 to sub 1:55. None of the 49 100 flyers other than Milak & Phelps has ever swum a world class 200 fly. Phelps has never been under 23 in 50 fly.
Not to mention that Milak is also among 21/47/1:45 50/100/200 freestylers, which itself isn’t a very huge club.

Ponti has been 1:54 in the 200 fly out of the 49 100-ers, but that’s it. Kharun will likely join the sub 1:55 etc. etc. group soon as well. He is hundredths away from a sub 50 in the 100.

Ooops I totally forgot Ponti. So it should be sub 23/50/1:54.
