In a race that was dominated by the World Record swim from Gretchen Walsh in 23.55, home countrywoman Sara Curtis continued to make headlines of her own by continuing her impressive outing in Rome with a new Italian record in the women’s 50 freestyle in 24.09, lowering her own mark of 24.29 that she swam earlier this year.

This swim continued her national record breaking onslaught in Rome, as she had already clocked a national best in the 100 free, in which she became the first Italian woman ever under the 53 second barrier in 52.69. She also added the 50 back to her national records this week, clocking 27.07, moving her up the 2nd fastest performer in the world this season, simultaneously breaking the European Record

Curtis’ 50 free performance now bumps her up to the 6th fastest performer in the world this season in the event. She sits only one hundredth of a second outside of Australian Meg Harris who sits 5th in 24.08.
