BRONZE – Sara Curtis (ITA), 52.69 *Italian Record*
Italy’s Sara Curtis has put on a show in front of her home crowd by breaking her 2nd Italian record of the meet, this time in the 100 back. Her first national record came from the 50 back last night, where she broke the overall European record and posted the 5th fastest time in history in 27.07.
Tonight, Curtis dipped below the 53 barrier for the first time in her career, and has now taken off a total of 0.49 seconds from the standard that the previous Italian record holder, Federica Pellegrini, set. Curtis is now in a three-way tie with Pernille Blume and Femke Heemskerk for the #19 fastest performer in history.
Splits Comparison
| Split | Federica Pellegrini – 2016 Sette Colli | Sara Curtis – 2025 Italian Championships (prev. NR) | Sara Curtis – 2026 Sette Colli (new NR) |
| 50 | 25.90 | 25.16 | 24.94 |
| 100 | 53.18 (27.28) | 53.01 (27.85) | 52.69 (27.75) |
The 19-year-old had a stronger opening 50 and closing leg compared to her previous best, shaving about 2 tenths off the start and 1 tenth off the finish. Compared to Pellegrini, Curtis’ strength clearly lies in her opening speed, as she was nearly a full second ahead of Pellegrini’s pace at the flip.
Curtis has just the 50 free left on her schedule for the 2026 Sette Colli, but will be back in the pool for the European Championships in August.
