Van Mathias Breaks Own American Record With 26.30 50 Breast, Becomes #5 Performer All-Time

Van Mathias swam to a new American Record in the men’s 50 breaststroke as he touched in a 26.30 on Wednesday night. That broke his own American Record of a 26.39 that he set in April at the Bergen Swim Festival.

Mathias moves up to sit as the #5 performer all-time now. He is the fastest American all-time by 0.15 as Nic Fink‘s American Record was a 26.45 until Mathias broke that in April. In addition to setting a new American Record, Mathias broke Michael Andrew‘s US Open Record of a 26.52 from 2022. Andrew swam a 26.87 tonight for 2nd.

Mathias sits at the top of the World standings so far this year. He will be a member of the US roster later this summer at Pan Pacs as he is set to swim the 50 breast. The 25 year old has had a strong last year of competition as he did not compete from March 2023 after NCAAs with Indiana until June 2025 when he came out of retirement. Mathias is currently the Director of Operations for Indiana’s college program.
