Opelika Swim Team is a city owned swim program focused on growing the sport in Opelika, AL and the surrounding communities.  The head coach is responsible for the growth and development of the learn-to-swim lesson program, pre-competitive teams, age group, senior, and national programs.  Opelika Swim Team trains and competes at the Opelika Sportsplex, which offers an indoor 25 yard and an outdoor 50m training facility.

This position is FLSA exempt (full-time). In addition to the base salary, this position earns up to 30% of swimming program revenue. The essential function of the position within the organization is to provide training direction, encouragement, and to grow competitive swimming in the community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess a BS degree in Recreation Administration or a related field.
  • Must obtain and maintain State of Alabama Driver’s License.
  • Must be a registered (and in good standing) USA Swimming coach.
  • Requires five years of related coaching experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered as determined by the hiring authority.
  • Applicants are required to submit to a background check and random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversees development and success of Swim Lesson, Pre-Comp., Age-Group, Senior, and National level groups.
  • Provides training direction, encouragement, motivation, and competitive advice to prepare athletes for competitive events.
  • Plans, organizes, and conducts practice sessions.
  • Instructs and enforces safety rules and regulations.
  • Instructs proper strokes required to teach swimming skills and competitive swimming from beginner to advanced levels.
  • Oversees planning and development of instructional/learn-to-swim programs.
  • Monitors athletes’ use of equipment to ensure safe and proper use.
  • Adjusts coaching techniques, based on the strengths and weaknesses of athletes.
  • Remains aware of changing rules, techniques, technologies, and philosophies relevant to their sport.
  • Develops and arranges competition schedules and programs.
  • Contacts the parents of athletes to provide information and answer questions parents may have.
  • Coordinates travel arrangements and travel with team to away competitions.
  • Performs standard swim team / swim lesson administrative tasks such as data entry, preparing routine reports, maintaining records and files.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the City Administrator.
  • Regularly attends work and is willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required.
  • Travels to attend workshops, aquatics-related seminars, as well as competitive swimming sites.

    • Maintain knowledge of laws or regulations.
    • Maintain records, documents, or other files.
    • Promote products, activities, or organizations.
    • Provide educational information to the public.
    • Hire staff for Swim Lesson, Pre-Comp, Age Group, Senior, and National Groups.
    • Train others in performance techniques.
