Day two of the 2026 AP Race London International brought about the final of the women’s 4o0m IM, with 16-year-old Amalie Smith stunning the field with a gold medal-winning performance.
Smith stopped the clock at a mighty result of 4:35.18 to clear the field by over two seconds, erasing the prior meet record in the process.
The former AP Race standard stood at the 4:37.99 European Championships medalist Katie Shanahan established at last year’s edition of this competition.
Tonight, however, Smith hacked over a second off that previous mark to grab the gold ahead of American Audrey Derivaux (4:37.27) and Spaniard Alba Vazquez (4:38.52).
Teenager Smith’s performance tonight overtook her previous PB and British Age Record of 4:35.46 notched just last month at the Aquatics GB Championships.
It also beat the 4:35.49 she put on the books for silver at the 2025 World Junior Championships.
Splits for the teen’s outing this evening included:
29.17
1:02.60
1:39.65
2:16.00
2:53.52
3:31.92
4:04.44
4:35.18
Her effort this evening keeps her positioned as the 4th-fastest British woman in history, with a long career ahead of her.
American Derivaux was also a formidable force in this final, hitting a time of 4:37.27 to notch a new personal best. Entering this competition, the 16-year-old’s PB rested at the 4:39.67 from last year’s World Junior Championships, so she knocked well over a second off that result to snag the silver tonight.
Spain’s Alba Vazquez also landed on the podium in 4:38.52, good enough for bronze.
Smith now ranks 6th in the world on the season.

At her age with that backstroke split she could be coming up on another pretty big drop soon.
With 4:34.34 2025 Romania & AP meet win of 4:35.18 she should be warmed up, nicely rested & ready for a win with a PB in Glasgow or Paris.
Smiths swim last night was a pb- she has never swim a 4.34!
