Day 2 Prelims Heat Sheet
The first full day of events at the 2026 Fort Lauderdale Open is upon us, and while every race is set to be competitive as swimmers look for a spot in one of the three finals tonight, there were a number of high-profile scratches.
Virginia’s Thomas Heilman, a 2024 Paris Olympian, has scratched out of his event this morning, dropping the 100 free, where he was seeded 17th (49.06), as well as from the 200 fly (1:53.82), where the Cavalier was the 3rd seed. He’s not the only Todd DeSorbo-trained swimmer to pull out of their events this morning, as his teammate, Max Williamson, is also missing this morning’s action. A recent two-time NCAA champion, Williamson will not take to the blocks in the 100 free nor in the 50 back, where he was the 9th and 7th seeds, respectively.
Virginia’s ACC rivals, NC State, and their pro-team Wolfpack Elite also had several high-profile scratches, with Olympian Rhyan White withdrawing from this morning’s 50 back, where she was the 3rd seed. Her training partners, Leah Shackley and Kennedy Noble, would have been in line to inherit her spot in lane 5 of the first of the circle-seeded heats, but they, too, have scratched out of the session with the pair, also dropping the 200 fly, where they were the 10th and 28th seeds. On the men’s side, Hudson Williams, Daniel Diehl, Quintin McCarty, and Aiden Hayes have all pulled out of the morning’s session. Of the four, Diehl was the highest-ranked swimmer, entering the meet as the 4th seed in the 50 back, an event which McCarty won last year at the US Nationals.

The scratches don’t get their entry fees returned I hope.
No live feed = no reason to swim in the meet.
If these scratches were for Top 30 swimmers, I wonder how many scratches there were in total, ex. Men’s 100 free between 31 – 124th seeded time. Heat sheet still indicates 102 swimmers might swim
Finals season. Probably shouldn’t have entered the meet knowing the conflict was there. Would’ve saved on entry fees!
They probably pulled out due to finals, at least Maximus and thomas
Yes, UvA spring exams start April 30
Lame
Academics come first at UVA (as they should at all universities). Student athlete.
yea bro cmon bro just come to a inconsequential swim meet instead of focusing on your exams bro trust me this is way more important bro
Agreed, lame. The academic calendar and exam schedules are known months before these entries were made, must be a good revenue stream for the meet hosts.
Final exams now for undergrads at UVa.
It’s a student athlete thing.
UVa fans coming out in force to defend being lame. Weird that the women don’t have finals?? Only the men??
Also lame of UVa to not announce the final exam schedule until AFTER these swimmers entered the meet, amiright? I’m sure the student-athletes’ haven’t had those for months and only recently learned about them.
Feel like this is an exuberant amount of scratches. Not surprised but annoying to see, don’t get to see super stacked fields all that often.
exuberant?
