Olympic Champion David Popovici Splits 46.97 100 Free Anchor

2026 ROMANIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

While Olympic champion and former world record holder David Popovici did not contest an individual event on day four of the 2026 Romanian National Championships, the 21-year-old did put up a head-turning split on the men’s 4x100m free relay.

Racing in the final of the relay tonight in Otopeni, Popovici anchored his squad in a time of 46.97, by far the fastest of any leg on any squad.

According to the results, Popovici opened in 22.46 and closed in 24.51 to help his squad grab the gold decisively, establishing a new Romanian national record in the process.

Prior to this swim, Popovici had already turned in times of 22.02 in the 50m free and 1:45.89 in the 200m free to claim national titles in both individual events.

Look for Popovici to race the 100m free before this competition comes to a close.

Great baseline times for David. He will take it up a couple notches for the Championship season.

He’s regressing. It’s just sad to see at this point. He should hang it up.

48:44 with splits 24:18 / 24:26 in prelims. That’s extremely controlled.

Ooh! Can’t wait to see his 100 Free tomorrow. He’s looking good in the leadup to Euros. I know someone asked in another thread, but do we know if he’s going to Sette Colli?
