Kristof Milak Takes On 100 Free, 200 Fly Semi-Finals About 15 Minutes Apart

2026 Hungarian National Championships

We saw our first evening session of the 2026 Hungarian National Championships unfold, with the likes of Kristof Milak, Nandor Nemeth and Richard Marton among the contenders.

If you were expecting to find the finals results for world record holder Milak’s 100m free and 200m fly events, you’ll need to wait one more day, however.

As we reported, the course of this competition has changed from recent years past. This time around, semi-finals have returned in the 50-100-200 distances, meaning one has to swim the given distance three times to win medals; however, the B-finals have been discontinued.

With that in mind, the sole medal-deciding contests this evening came in the men’s and women’s 50m backstroke race.

In the men’s edition, it was Adam Jaszo who got to the wall first, establishing himself as the gold medalist with a time of 25.30. That was after he notched a mark of 24.96 in the semi-final earlier in the same session.

Although it was Olympic champion Hubi Kos‘ younger brother, Oliver Kos, who snagged the 2nd seed (25.09) out of the semis, it was Benedik Kovacs who upgraded to the silver medal position in the main event.

Kovacs touched in 25.47, while Kos settled for bronze just .07 later in 25.54.

Fanni Viktoria Kokas was the top female 50m backstroker this evening, lowering her top-seeded semi-final swim of 28.68 down to a swifter 28.47 for gold.

Lora Fanni Komoroczy was next to the wall in 28.57 as the only other sub-29-second performer, with veteran Katalin Burian rounding out the podium in 29.47.

26-year-old Milak captured the 2nd seed in the men’s 100m free, registering a semi swim of 49.34 and one of seven swimmers to delve under the 50-second barrier tonight. He is the national record holder in this event, courtesy of the 47.47 he put on the books in 2022.

Nandor Nemeth set himself apart from the pack with a top-seeded swim of 48.11, however.

Opening in 22.92 and closing in 25.19, Nemeth’s result put everyone on notice for tomorrow night’s final.

Nemeth owns a lifetime best of 47.49 from when he became teh 2024 European champion. Last year at the World Championships in Singapore, the 26-year-old clocked a mark of 47.72 to finish a painstaking 9th place.

The schedule lists the 100m free as starting at 17:58 while the 200m fly events kick off at 18:10.

As such, with just about 15 minutes between, the 200m fly saw Milak earn the 4th seed in a very smooth and casual outing of 1:59.88.

Racing in his first competition since last year’s edition of these championships, Milak was bested tonight by Marton’s time of 1:56.56, David Antal‘s mark of 1:57.34 and Balazs Hollo‘s performance of 1:58.31.

Marton’s PB checks in at the 1:54.54 put up in 2023, while last year in Singapore, he turned in a time of 1:55.51 in the prelims before ultimately finishing in 1:55.80 for 14th overall.

Milak’s world record remains at the 1:50.34 he delivered at the 2022 World Championships.

I am not going to comment on Milak’s shape until we see him legitimately try in finals.

Since when did the Hungarian Swimming Federation consult American Republicans on this schedule?

It makes no sense to have semifinals. What a waste.

What’s the strategy if you can absolutely cruise and still make finals? Are you just trying to feel smooth?

Mildly surprised he even showed up! Guess we’ll see tomorrow what kind of racing condition he’s in. He didn’t seem to be going too hard in these races today.

The Hungarian Swimming Federation just hates him for no reason. They’re clearly not very smart.

I can list 10s of reasons why they “hate”* him.
He is absolutely unbearable to them. Demeaning and condescending to the coaches. He ripped his latest coaches from their 2024 Olympics results $ prizes. He communicates nothing, misleads the federation, pulls out from races in the last minute, leaving relays in ruins. Draws his salary without ever showing up, fulfilling his responsibilities. Other than what he does in the water, he is the opposite of a role model. I want his actions to describe him and not adjectives.

“hate” – they want to love him

Source for these claims?

If it’s untrue, it is completely defamatory and someone needs to be held accountable.

if it’s untrue, hold all the Hungarian publications responsible. Interviews with coaches, facts where he was or wasn’t not, videos, posts, comments from leaders of the federation, his interviews, etc. Basic cognitive functions will get you there

you can read it EVERYWHERE. Knowing Hungarian would help for sure

I read Hungarian news. Those are all one-sided claims from the federation’s side. And what you said is a much more malicious version of those claims. You’ve been consistently posting hated messages towards Milak on this site and I want you to know this only makes yourself look bad.
I’m glad I’ve seen many other Hungarian commenters on this site who are normal people with sense, so that I know not all Hungarians are as horrifying as you and those bureaucrats.

Never said that that was my source.
Swimmers who swim/swam with him, coaches that coach/coached him, the media that reports on him ALL must be lying, right??? You have no idea what you are talking about.
With Hungary’s dictatorship until this Sunday, the media – conservative, government run, paid propaganda vs liberal, funded by the readership has been divided about everything. Except for one story; Milak’s. They all reported the same thing, day in day out. They reported the facts. Do you want links???? Do you speak/read Hungarian?

Did I write about anything else, the rumors, his drug use, mysterious surgeries, dark stories? No, and I would not because… Read more »
