ACC Finalist Mason Leach Transferring To Texas A&M After Two Seasons At Pitt

Mason Leach will join Texas A&M this fall as a transfer after spending his freshman and sophomore seasons at Pitt. Leach is originally from Hillsboro, Oregon.

Leach arrived at Pitt in fall 2023 and finished his freshman season at the 2025 ACC Championships. There he swam lifetime bests in all of his events and was highlighted by a 24th place finish in the 100 back with a 47.27. He was slightly faster in prelims with a 46.63. He also swam to lifetime bests in the 200 back (1:45.01) and 100 fly (48.39).

He finished his sophomore season at the 2026 ACC Championships and finished 18th in the 100 back with a lifetime best 46.08. He also swam the backstroke leg on Pitt’s 4th place 200 medley relay as well as their 8th place 400 medley relay. His other individual places included a 1:44.16 200 back for 32nd and a 47.13 100 fly for 35th. Both were lifetime bests.

Leach’s Best Times Are:

  • 100 back: 46.08
  • 200 back: 1:44.16
  • 100 fly: 47.13

The Texas A&M finished 9th out of 11 teams at the 2026 SEC Championships. Logan Brown led the way with 67 individual points including a 4th place finish in the 200 breast (1:51.55).

Based on his best times, Leach is right on the edge of the ‘B’ and ‘C’ finals in the 100 back while his 200 back would have made the ‘C’ final. The Aggie men had no finalists in the 100 back and no entries at all in the 200 back at 2026 SECs. Leach’s time in the 100 back would have led the team this past season. The team’s top 200 backstroker Munzy Kabbara swam a 1:41.69 in the team’s dual meet against Alabama but did not swim the event at SECs.

SO MUCH trashy commentary here – ouch!
Perhaps more on the prospects of the athlete and his new TAMU home would help.

You think a 46/144 back striker is getting big NIL bucks? He’s probably on a very very partial scholarship

Not so. A&M has a ton of money. He is probably getting 3 times the deal he had at Pitt. Problem is, he will only get 1/3 the coaching.

Seems like a good pickup for A&M. They were in need of a half decent backstroker last year.

Why are you digging up a comment section from years ago to try to make a program look bad? Btw, your boy at Texas that you love to praise gets a shout in those comments for something far more egregious than what is implied about Pitt, yet you’ve never acknowledged that.

Totally speculating here, but my guess is Kreitler came in strong and tried to change the expectations at Pitt to reflect the programs he had been at previously (Cal/Texas). As is well within his rights to do so as the head coach (with the obvious caveat that there should be no toleration for abuse, etc.), just like it’s well within the rights of the swimmers to enter the… Read more »

3/4 of their top athletes are in the portal, they already look bad lol. They don’t need me to help them with that.

Bob, a better answer would have been “You’re right”, but that would be way to hard for you to stomach.

Chase came in hard a few years ago, but he has relaxed and continued to build the program from one where there was very little buy-in for the program to one where there is huge buy-in.

And everything said about Coach Kreitler in those comments turned out to be wrong or dead wrong. The people complaining then never qualified for a meet bigger than Futures.

Kreitler to Cal? That’s my immediate thought

Cancer and immature guys have decided to leave the team because they don’t like team rules that are centered around treating yourself like a pro. Koch probably can’t turn down the opportunity to put 6 figures in the bank.
Has nothing to do with coaches who are great people

They weren’t getting what they deserved, and weren’t treated right. Definitely something with the coaches.

New CULTURE, you are expected to act like an adult and train at the NCAA D1 level. Unless you have been there, you don’t get it.

Nothing you’d think. Coach Kreitler is building a phenom program, and the people he is building up are transferring for money or fame. Can’t blame anyone but the system and the NCAA in that problem.

Not a bucket of NIL money at TAMU, but they ARE fully funding scholarships for the swim/dive team.

Also, don’t forget that the SEC has a 22-spot roster limit they’re dealing with. ACC is at 30
