The 2026 Australian Open is upon us, with action kicking off at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre on Monday, April 6th (Sunday evening, Eastern time) and spanning Wednesday, April 8th.
Although the meet is a non-selection competition, it represents an important stepping stone along the path to June’s all-important Australian Trials. That’s the meet where the Pan Pacific Championships and Commonwealth Games rosters will be determined.
We reported how big guns to the tune of Kaylee McKeown, Kyle Chalmers and Elijah Winnington are entered in the three-day affair. But also noteworthy is the fact that Olympic champion Zac Stubblety-Cook, fresh off missing last year’s championship season, is also among the entrants.
There are some veteran surprises among the mix as well, including butterfliers David Morgan and Olympic medalist Maddie Groves. Of note, new dad and newly minted World Record holder in the men’s 50m freestyle Cameron McEvoy is not entered.
Prelims begin at 9am local (7pm ET previous night) and final commence at 6pm local (4am ET).

went to bed this had like 19 comments, woke up and saw 127 and was like “oh boy let’s see what’s up”
A speedy 48.05 anchor leg from Jamie Jack in that medley relay
Interesting to note that former Russian Mark Nikolaev is now able to swim for Australia based on his poolside interview .. not sure how much value he would add to our sprint backstroke stocks, but I’d take anything at this point tbh.
Looks like he was unlikely to make a Russian national team at this stage because they have incredible backstroke depth. A bit of a win/win with this transfer because he’s more likely to get into an international comp and any semi-decent backstroker will be helpful for us for now
He could be useful for SC Worlds at the end of the year.
With Henry allan always missing or scratching 100 back events, which really affects his race practice, we need more backstroke depth
william Yang could have been another potential backstroker
I don’t like this narrative you’re building around Henry. He’s scratched like, 3(?) races in the past 12 months and he has posted 3x 100m back races this season so far. Nothing out of the ordinary
Compared to Sienna Toohey who’s game and races every opportunity she gets .. so yeah that’s exactly the narrative I am building and I just tell it how I see it .. no use mother coddling the boy if he needs to go up the boys that go 51-52 seconds and he doesn’t race much to hone his competition skills where it is much needed under the big lights
Are you a part of his team or in his inner circle? If you are, speak away. But I assume you are not, so you have absolutely no idea of his physical or mental condition, every circumstance he may be going through, or why he may choose to race or not to race.
You are assuming that every withdrawal he makes is because he ‘doesn’t feel like it’ which, unless we hear about it directly from him or his team, is a completely unfair assumption. There are plenty of reasons to race or not race, and you are making baseless judgements simply because you have noticed it has happened a few times.
Thank you for saying what I was thinking.
Sienna Toohey probably with the swim of the night for me. Fantastic progress for her
pallister 8:11.28
Lowkey super fast…
Another scary season coming up from Lani
Looking forward to her continuing to get a run to LA
Was that a PB from Molly Walker?
8.29, I think.
yes by 2 seconds
still a very good swim in season
could be sub 8.10 it should be
Alex didn’t look too happy with that.
