Seven-Time Asian Games Medalist Daiya Seto Misses Out On Japan’s 2026 Roster

2026 ASIAN GAMES

  • Saturday, September 19th – Sunday, October 4th
  • Tokyo Aquatics Center (swimming)
  • LCM (50m)
  • Meet Central

The 2026 Asian Games are headed to Japan this Fall, with the entire multi-sport competition spanning Saturday, September 19th, through Sunday, October 4th.

Swimming action will take place at the Tokyo Aquatics Center, where high-profile stars from Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong and beyond will battle it out for hardware and prestigious titles.

The previous edition of the quadrennial event, the 2022 Asian Games, actually took place in Hangzhou, China in 2023, postponed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That iteration saw China top the overall medal table across all sports, with Japan and South Korea representing a respective distant 2nd and 3rd.

Specific to swimming, China once again led all of the countries; however, South Korea earned runner-up honors, followed by Japan.

Following the conclusion of last week’s Japan Swim, Japan has revealed its men’s and women’s roster for the Asian Games. The lineup looks nearly identical to the lists released for this year’s Pan Pacific Championships, save for two swimmers on the men’s side.

2024 Short Course World Championships bronze medalist Yamato Fukasawa and Junior Pan Pacific Championships multi-gold medalist Asaki Nishikawa will represent Japan at the Pan Pacs but will not be diving in for the home-based Asian Games.

The men’s Asian Games roster is headed up by breaststroke prodigy Shin Ohashi, IM dynamo and Olympic silver medalist Tomoyuki Matsushita and Olympic silver medalist Tomoru Honda. The women’s list includes three-time Olympian Rikako Ikee, 35-year-old Olympic multi-medalist veteran Satomi Suzuki and open water and pool distance freestyle ace Ichika Kajimoto.

Among those who are missing is Olympic medalist and 7-time Asian Games medalist Daiya Seto, who placed well off the podium at the aforementioned Japan Swim. Mizuki Hirai is absent for the women’s team, having missed the Japan Swim in favor of racing for the University of Tennessee stateside at the 2026 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

This dude has one of the most hilarious career face plants in swimming history. Was flying high on his way to Olympic glory than decided to let his willy run wild.

From Wikipedia:

In September 2020, it was reported by The Japan TimesYahoo!, and The Washington Post that Seto was involved in an extramarital affair.[58][59][60] Seto apologised and resigned from his position as captain of the Japan Olympic Swim Team.[61][62]

That does suck.

I get it generally makes you a bad person, but I don’t think it was fair to suspend him for that (and I don’t think he would have in any other country).
