800 Free #2 Seed Boglarka Kapas Scratches 800 Free Prelims in Windsor

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The biggest scratch for today’s prelims session was Hungarian Boglarka Kapas out of the 800m free. Kapas, a prolific distance swimmer and the LCM record holder in this event, was the 2nd seed. With Kapas scratching, that gives the USA the top two seeds for the 800 today. Leah Smith is the top seed, followed by Ashley Twichell. Meanwhile, Kapas’ countrymate and SCM national record holder Katinka Hosszu will compete at the third seed.

There was another significant scratch on the women’s side, from GBR’s Hannah Miley. While she’ll still contest the 800 free, she’s dropped the 200 fly from her schedule this morning. Miley was the 12th seed in the butterfly.

On the men’s side, there were several scratches of note. Gabriele Detti, Italian distance freestyler won’t be swimming in the 200m free, where he was seeded 14th. Yesterday, Detti, the 400 free bronze medalist from Rio, swam the 400m free but did not qualify for last night’s final. There were four top-24 scratches in the men’s 100 fly– Brazil’s Kaio Almeida, Singapore’s Zheng Wen Quah, Australia’s Brayden McCarthy, and Venezuelan Albert Subirats.
