Lander Valley High School won the Wyoming Class 3A (small schools) boys state title over the weekend, sweeping the relays and getting a perfect 4-for-4 sweep from senior Tucker Russell.
Russell dominated his two races, topping the 200 IM in 1:59.55 and the 100 back in 53.99. That backstroke time came within a second of the Wyoming state record in the event.
But the biggest swim for Lander Valley actually came in prelims of the 200 medley relay. Russell joined with Ryan Crawford, Chase Bolding and Griffin Leemon to go 1:39.15 in that race, breaking the class 3A state record. The team couldn’t quite match their time in finals, going 1:40.32, but it was still the field’s best time by four seconds.
Crawford also won individually for Lander Valley, going 1:00.56 to take the 100 breast. Just before that, he led off the 200 free relay, which won in 1:31.61. Russell then led off the 400 free relay, which won in 3:21.76.
Also winning twice individually was Powell’s Ben Wetzel, who paced the distance free races. His 1:50.03 topped the 200, and he was 5:06.34 to win the 500.
Other winners:
- Lyman’s Charles Lallatin paced the 50 free, going 22.05.
- Kemmerer won two events in a row through the middle of the meet, starting with a 1-meter diving title from senior Brandon Ellis (376.65 points)
- The other Kemmerer winner was freshman Carl Krell in the 100 fly. His 52.89 is only about 1.8 seconds off the state record.
