The 2026 Sydney Open & Unisport Nationals competition is nearly upon us, with action kicking off from the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Friday, May 15th.
This is an important stepping stone on the path to June’s Australian Trials, the meet which determines the nation’s roster for this year’s Commonwealth Games.
While past swimmers to the tune of newly minted World Record holder Cameron McEvoy are bypassing this year’s edition, there is still an impressive pool of talent headed to the three-day affair, including a strong Japanese contingent.
Multiple World Junior record holder Shin Ohashi is among those ready to rumble, leading a roster which includes former World Record holder Ippei Watanabe, World Championships medalist Tatsuya Murasa and fellow World Junior Record holder Yumeki Kojima.
17-year-old Ohashi currently owns the WJR’s across the 100m and 200m breaststroke events. He notched representative efforts of 58.67 and 2:06.59, both at this year’s Japan Open, to rank among the best-ever in each race.
His 17-year-old teammate Yumeki Kojima is another one to watch this weekend, with the teen owning the 200m IM and 400m IM World Junior records in 1:56.53 and 4:08.84, respectively.
On the home front, Olympian Flynn Southam heads up the Dolphins’ roster, joined by Hannah Casey, Sam Williamson, Grayson Bell and David Schlicht.
- Bond Swim Club – Flynn Southam
- Bond University – Ben Armbruster, Hannah Casey, Jesse Coleman, Joshua Collett
- Japan – Takehara Hidekazu, Ippei Watanabe, Katsuhiro Matsumoto, Konosuke Yanagimoto, Mio Narita, Rikako Ikee, Shin Ohashi, Tatsuya Murasa, Yumeki Kojima, Ai Soma
- Melbourne Vicentre – Sam Williamson
- Mingara – Bradley Woodward
- MLC Aquatic – David Schlicht
- Nudgee – Harrison Turner
- Sommerville House Aquatics – Grayson Bell, Joshua Conias

No Livestream – apparently no-one can hold up a phone down there? . Meet mobile not updating. Live results not updating. It’s 6.15 pm . What the hell is happening?
Oof meet mobile just updated.
The only ones i’m curious to see are Ohashi, who seems to drop time in breaststroke every time he hits the water, and Murasa in the 200 free
Very weak field. No one seems to care about this little meet anymore.
Except some of the universities
Is it because of timing + crazy qualification times? What was the timing like previously?
Thinking it was 4-5 weeks before trials other years but will confirm.
Similar timing. This meet was really good right before Tokyo.
Can’t imagine we’ll see anything too impressive from the Australians just 3 weeks before trials. Casey’s in season times this year have improved massively from last year so she’s the only one I think might show something notable…
