For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of βUpsβ and βDownsβ is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, weβll be tracking βUps,β βMids,β and βDownsβ after each prelims session. βUpsβ refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, βMidsβ to B finalists, and βDownsβ to C finalists.
Scores After Day 3
- Princeton β 952
- Yale β 874.5
- Harvard β 785.5
- Brown β 586
- Cornell β 581
- Columbia β 580.5
- Dartmouth β 466
- Penn β 444.5
The psych sheet predicted this would be Harvard and Princetonβs biggest day and both teams performed as expected. They both earned 18 finals swims, with Princeton picking up 13 top-8 finalists and Harvard, 6. The Tigers had a particularly strong showing in the 200 fly and 3-meter diving, both of which garnered 5 slots in the βAβ final. Harvard was more evenly spread out and the Crimson came away with the #1 qualifiers in the 200 back and 200 fly. Yale had 16 finalists, including 6 top-8s, while Columbia scored 14 with 5 βAβ finalists.
Columbia outperformed their seedings by 56 points; Cornell was up by 27. Coming into Day 4, only 5.5 points separated 4th-place Brown from 6th-place Columbia, so this was a critical morning for the Lions, the Big Red, and the Bears.
