The big guns have kept their powder dry for tonight’s final, and only nine teams competing after Canada’s scratch – and therefore only one missing out on that final – that looks like a good tactic.
Scotland put 200 free European U23 silver medalist Charlie Hutchison on the leadoff for their quartet, who will all be aiming to claim one of the two spots available alongside Duncan Scott and Evan Jones in tonight’s final.
The Welsh team will also be auditioning, with Matt Richards and Tyler Melbourne-Smith locks for tonight. Kieran Bird swam in the heats for Great Britain at the 2024 Olympics and is likely to be selected, and we get to see 100 fly Welsh record holder Lewis Fraser try his hand at an event he has not swum since 2019.
Australia swim Elijah Winnington, their 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in the 200 free, and 1:44.93 swimmer Edward Sommerville this morning, as well as with William Petric who has been 1:46.1 this season. That indicates a finals team of Sam Short, Kai Taylor, Harrison Turner, and whoever impresses most this morning.
England leave Tom Dean off a prelims relay for the first time this week, indicating that he has done enough to be selected for tonight’s final already. Jacob Mills, Jacob Whittle, and Max Litchfield will battle to join Dean, Gabriel Shepherd, and James Guy on the relay tonight, while Cam Brooker, a backstroke specialist who swam the 50 back final last night, gets the chance to lower his 1:49.90 PB after splitting 48.34 on the men’s 4×100 free relay.
The Isle of Man relay features 14-year-old Oscar Maddrell, who recently swept the 200/400/800/1500 freestyles at the Aquatics GB Next Gen Championships, posting a lifetime best 1:56.84 in the 200 free.
India will be chasing their national record of 7:23.38 from last September’s Asian Championships. Their relay tonight features four of the top 11 performers in Indian history in the 200 free.
