2025 World University Games: Day 2 Finals Preview/Scratches

2025 World University Games

Day one of the WUGs was exciting, with loads of National Records falling. Today we are gearing up for another fun finals session with five medal events underway and five semifinals that will turn into medal events tomorrow.

First things first, there was one semifinals scratch. Canadian swimmer Delia Lloyd was 14th in the 100 freestyle prelims this morning, but she scratched out of the semifinal meaning Japan’s Rio Suzuki is in.

Lloyd is the 4th seed in tonight’s 200 backstroke final, and could end up on the podium in that event which is presumably why she scratched the 100 freestyle.

The women’s 200 backstroke final is the last final of the evening, but we already saw a record in the event semifinals with American Leah Shackley breaking the former WUGs record by almost a full second.

She will be joined in the final by fellow American Kennedy Noble, who was also under the WUGs record yesterday and sits only six-hundredths back.

Camila Rodrigues Rebelo is the last athlete in the final who was under 2:10, coming in as the 3rd seed in 2:09.50.

Shifting back to the top of the lineup, the first final of the evening will be the women’s 400 IM. American Leah Hayes ran away with the event in the prelims, earning the top seed by more than two seconds over Ayami Suzuki from Japan.

Teagan O’Dell is the 3rd seed, sitting six tenths back of Suzuki and she and Hayes will be trying to make an American 1-2 finish.

The men’s and women’s 50 fly events are next, both of which saw new National records yesterday.

The men’s event will swim first and Italian Simone Stefani comes in as the top seed, only one-hundredth ahead of Germany’s Ole Mats Eidam who is seeded 2nd.

The whole final is separated by less than half-a-second and any of the athletes could realistically end up at the top of the podium.

Uzbekistan’s Eldorbek Usmonov, the 3rd seed, was one of yesterday’s National Record breakers, and he will be looking to lower his own record and earn a spot on the podium.

The women’s 50 fly is led by American Caroline Larsen who has the top seed by a tenth of a second over Viola Scotto Di Carlo of Italy. Kalia Antoniou of Cyprus is seeded 6th, and she has the potential to lower her own National Record from yesterday as well.

Again, this final has less than half-a-second between 1st and 8th, meaning it is anyone’s game.

The final men’s medal event of the evening is the 100 breaststroke final, another event where there was a National Record, which was set by Hong Kong’s Cheung Chi Kit Nicholas, who is the 7th seed.

The event is led by Dawid Wiekiera from Poland, sitting eight-hundredths ahead of America’s Nate Germonprez. These are the only two who were under 1:00 in the semifinal yesterday.

We will also have a number of semifinals starting with the men’s 200 freestyle where Nikolai Kolesnikov, last night’s 400 freestyle champion, is the top seed.

Next, will be the women’s 100 freestyle which is led by American Maxine Parker.

The men’s 100 backstroke is a very tight race with South African Pieter Coetze leading the way over American Will Modglin who is the 2nd seed.

Emma Weber is the top seed in the women’s 50 breast, coming in as one of two athletes under 31 seconds this morning.

The final event of the evening will be the men’s 200 IM, where the American men took the 1st and 2nd seeds with Mitchell Schott and Owen McDonald.

The finals session will start at 7 p.m. local time, 1 p.m. EST.
