The final night of the World Cup stop in Westmont will be underway soon, but one big name has made changes to her lineup for the evening.
Phoebe Bacon scratched the women’s 200 IM final, where she was the fifth seed at 2:08.82, choosing to focus all of her energy on the 200 back instead, where she enters as the third-fastest swimmer at 2:03.55. In her absence, the ninth-quickest swimmer from prelims, Canadian veteran Mary-Sophie Harvey (2:09.93), is given the nod for a second swim.
Bacon is primarily known for her backstroke skills, having touched fourth in the 200 back at the past two Olympics, in addition to earning World silver in 2022. However, over the past year, her 200 IM has really taken shape. It’s the event she made the World Championship team in this past summer when she touched second at the U.S. Trials, compared to a fourth-place showing in the 200 back.
So far in the World Cup Series, Bacon has focused on both backstroke and IM. Her best finish from the first leg in Carmel came in the 200 back, where she touched sixth in 2:03.75, about three seconds shy of the 2:00.76 personal best she swam for fourth at the Short Course Worlds last December. She also grabbed eighth in the 100 (58.82) and 200 IM (2:07.42), and came 11th in the 100 back (57.35), with each representing new lifetime bests.
Earlier this week, Bacon took fourth in the 50 fly (25.45), sixth in the 100 IM (58.29), 10th in the 100 back (57.22), and 13th in the 50 back (26.92), setting all career bests once again.
