UMBC has taken the lead in the men’s meet after Friday’s action, while New Hampshire has taken over the women’s top spot.
Maine kicked things off with a decisive win in women’s 3-meter diving. Phil Ann Dixon racked up 280.20 points to take the America East title in the event by 34 points. Additionally, Dixon broke both the Championship Record and Conference Record with the performance.
New Hampshire then got the ball rolling, taking the first two women’s swimming events. Jamy Lum, a junior, established a slight lead early in the 500 free, and managed to hold on to that lead right through the finish of the race. Lum clocked a 4:51.89, with Vermont’s Mina Poppas taking 2nd with a 4:52.31.
Anna Metzler (New Hampshire), who coincidentally is the conference record holder in the 500 free, won the 200 IM in 1:59.04, touching as the only swimmer in the field under 2:00. Metzler, previously an NCAA qualifier in the 400 IM, used her speed on the front end, posting a 55.85 on the first 100.
Vermont handled the rest of the women’s events yesterday. Kira Parker took the 50 free in 23.30, touching first by a quarter-of-a-second. UVM then won the 200 free relay, where Parker led off in 23.52. Jackie House went 2nd in 23.28, Cailin Campbell swam a 23.60 on the 3rd leg, and Mina Poppas anchored in 23.24, for a final time of 1:33.64.
UMBC won the men’s 200 free relay, with Ryan Harding, Oliver Gassmann, Niklas Weigelt, and Bode Neale teaming up for a 1:20.88. Unfortunately, the splits malfunctioned on the race, although we do know that Harding led off in 20.76 and Gassmann split 20.26.
Niklas Weigelt and Oliver Gassmann went 1-2 in the men’s 50 free last night as well. Weigelt won the race in 20.23, and Gassmann took 2nd with a 20.40.
UMBC’s Daniel Nicusan won the men’s 200 IM in 1:47.41, using a very well-rounded race to win the title. He split 23.26 on fly, 27.57 on back, 30.59 on breast, and 25.99 on free.
Binghamton sophomore Liam Murphy was dominant in the men’s 500 free final, establishing a big early lead, and maintaining it through the back half of the race. He touched in 4:28.20, over 3 seconds ahead of the field.
