2016 Arena Pro Swim Series Charlotte: Day 2 Finals Scratch Report

2016 ARENA PRO SWIM SERIES – CHARLOTTE

The only A final to be impacted by scratches is the men’s 400 IM, which means we’re up for some huge races tonight in Charlotte. The women’s 100m butterfly final consisting of former world record holder Dana Vollmer, short course American Record Holder Kelsi Worrell and newly-minted Canadian Olympian Penny Oleksiak is an especially heated battle ready to unfold at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center beginning at 6pm EDT.

Scratches

  • Women’s 200 Freestyle – The A and B finals remain in tact, however, a few shake-ups occurred in the minor finals. Both 20th seeded Kirsty Coventry and 22nd seeded Ashley Twichell scratched the C-Final, which bumped Mexico’s Ayumi Macias Alba and Navy’s Lauren Barber up from the D-Final. Coventry dropped the 200 free in favor of her 50 backstroke final tonight. Twichell already has one win under her belt by way of her 1500 freestyle victory on night 1.
  • Men’s 200 Freestyle – The same scenario holds true for the men’s edition of the event, with the A and B Finals moving forward as they played out from the prelims, but the C and D Finals experienced some changes. Within the C-Final, Club Seminole’s Mateo De Angelo and Azura Florida’s Marcus Lavado both scratched. They held the 18th and 24th seeds, respectively, as a result of their morning swims. This bumped two Kentucky men into the C-Final in the form of Louisville’s Trevor Carroll and Kentucky Aquatics’ Sean Gunn. Metro Aquatics’ Juan Sequera opted out of the D-final, as did SwimMAC’s Matthew Josa. Josa made the A Final in the men’s 100m butterfly tonight.
  • Women’s 100 Breaststroke – No scratches.
  • Men’s 100 Breaststroke – All remains in tact save for a scratch by 17th seeded Uvis Kalnins from Missouri State. He scratched out of the C-Final, which knocked 20-year-old unattached swimmer Michael McBryan up from the D-Final. That means 1st alternate Ian Finnerty of Indiana Swim Team now also gets a nighttime swim.
  • Women’s 50 Backstroke – Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell is forgoing this sprint backstroke event in favor of her signature 100m butterfly race later this evening. As such, she opened a slot in the B-Final, which bumped Grand Canyon’s Estela Davis Ortiz from C to B for tonight. With just 30 swimmers in the entire field, everyone finaled, with the D race holding just 6 swimmers.
  • Men’s 50 Backstroke – A and B remain untouched, but Indiana Swim Team’s Joseph Lane, at the 15th seed, scratched the B-Final tonight. That bumps Michigan’s Paul Powers into that race and ultimately moves Nicolas Albiero from Cardinal Aquatics into the D-Final. Again, with just 28 swimmers overall, the D-Final won’t have a full 8 swimmers.
  • Women’s 100 Butterfly – The most notable scratch came in the form of SwimMAC’s Kate Mills opting out of the B-Final. She was seeded 15th in this event, but earned the 3rd seed in the 400 IM and has chosen to focus on the longer event. Her absence means Maggie Gruber will now race in tonight’s B-Final. Gruber was tied with teammate Klaudia Nazieblo, however, Nazieblo also scratched.
  • Men’s 100 Butterfly – No notable scratches.
  • Women’s 400 IM – Having earned a lane in 2 B-Finals on the night, Katie Drabot will keep the women’s 200m free, but has dropped the 400 IM. That moves Marah Pugh from C to B, as well as bumps 16-year-old SwimMAC swimmer Julia Menkhaus into the C-Final.
  • Men’s 400 IM – This is the only event where there was movement in the A-Final, as Alarii Levreault-Lopez relinquished his 8th seed, and the 9th-seeded Rober Owen also scratched. This means the 10th place finisher from prelims, Cody Bekemeyer, now finds himself in the A-Final of this race. Other scratches by swimmers such as 11th seeded Andrews Olvera Alejos and 12th placed Ross Dant render the D-Final as just having 5 contestants total.
