Brooke Stenstrom, who most recently finished a summer season that included a victory in the inaugural Futures championship on the West Coast, has committed to swim for the Stanford Cardinal. Stenstrom is currently swimming for Denver Swim Academy, but grew up in Menlo Park, CA, a town which forms most of the western border of Stanford’s campus. She is also the daughter of two Stanford athletes, with her mother Lori Heisick (’93) having swum under Richard Quick. Her father, Steve Stenstrom (’94), played quarterback for the Cardinal and remains the team record holder in multiple categories. He later went on to start in the NFL for both the Chicago Bear and the San Francisco 49ers.

Stenstrom’s two best races are the golden ticket in college swimming, the 50 and 100 free, and she is already under the 2016 NCAA “B” standard in the 100 free. Her best events are:
- 50 Free: 23.23
- 100 Free: 49.77
- 200 Free: 1:51.27
Of those, the 100 freestyle is most significant. While it would not be in the top five of Stanford’s team last year, and none of those swimmers graduate, she is within striking distance of current team #3 Lindsey Engel (49.29). Engel teamed up with Janet Hu, Lia Neal and Simone Manuel to win an NCAA title in American record time last year.
Stenenstrom, swimming for Valor Christian High School, has been the 4A (small school) State Champion in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyles . She does her club training with the Denver Swim Academy, whom she represented this summer when she became the first ever girls’ 50 free “Futures” champion in the western area in Mount Hood, Oregon.

Great athletic genes between the NFL dad and swimmer mom. I believe her mother Lori Heisick was a national HS record holder and then alternate to the ’88 Olympic team in the 100 breast getting 3rd at trials. She also may have held the American record briefly in the 100 yard breast or else was very close to it, back when the women were competing to become the first woman under 1:00.
