With Harvard in good position to end Princeton’s five-year reign at the top of the Ivy League, the most interesting race going on at 2014 Ivies is for the third step on the podium. Penn, Yale, and Columbia are all locked in a battle that could go any which way, depending on surprise points from the 1650s, diving, and relays.

Penn has held on at third since Day One, while Columbia overtook Yale for fourth yesterday and has been inching up on Penn. In the morning prelim sessions, Yale had a very successful 200 back, Penn did much better than expected in the 200 breast, and Columbia loaded up the 200 fly A final. Both Yale and Penn are likely to outscore Columbia in the mile. It could come down to the last relay and make for a very exciting Day Three.

1650 free – Meet Record: 14:58.35 John Cole (Harvard, 2005); Pool Record: 14:54.07 Brian Goodell (UCLA, 1981)

The same eight who swam in last night’s 1000 final will contest the mile tonight: Hogan, Swanson, Lerude, Ridout, Nolle, Goertemiller, Kekacs, and Gaudiani. If it is anything like last night’s race there will be a lot of excitement in the middle of the pool and records are sure to fall. Yale sophomore Brian Hogan (14:53.36) comes in with a seed time that would erase both the meet and pool records, but as we saw in the 1000, Penn’s Chris Swanson (15:06.86) is ready to match him stroke for stroke.

200 back – Brown 0/2/1, Columbia 0/0/3, Cornell 1/0/1, Dartmouth 1/0/2, Harvard 2/1/0, Penn 0/1/1, Princeton 2/2/0, Yale 2/2/0. Meet and Pool Record: 1:42.56 Jack Manchester (Harvard, 2014)

Manchester of Harvard broke the meet (1:43.17) and pool (1:44.93) records, both of which had belonged to Harvard’s David Cromwell since 2006. The next five qualifiers were also under the previous pool record: En-Wei Hu-Van Wright of Princeton (1:43.60), Connor Maher of Princeton (1:44.38), James Verhagen of Dartmouth (1:44.41), Dylan Sali of Cornell (1:44.46), and Rob Harder of Yale (1:44.82). This is likely to be the big race of the night, if not of the meet.

100 free – Brown 0/0/2, Columbia 0/1/1, Cornell 0/0/2, Dartmouth 0/2/0, Harvard/3 3/0, Penn 2/0/0, Princeton 3/1/1, Yale 0/1/2. Meet Record: 41.91 Alex Righi (Yale, 2009); Pool Record: 42.53 Alex Righi (Yale, 2008)

Harvard’s Chris Satterthwaite (43.55) and Griffin Schumacher (43.56) and Eric Schultz of Penn (43.64) were the three fastest times out of prelims in the 100 free. The A final will be packed tonight as only .64 separates the first from the eighth seed.

200 breast – Brown 0/1/1, Columbia 0/0/2, Cornell 0/1/0, Dartmouth 1/1/1, Harvard 1/1/1, Penn 3/2/1, Princeton 2/0/0, Yale 1/2/2.  Meet Record: 1:53.95 Nejc Zupan (Dartmouth, 2013); Pool Record: 1:56.10 Eric Ronda (Harvard, 2014)

Ronda broke the pool record (1:56.29 by Steve Lundquist of SMU in 1981) with the morning’s top qualifying swim, 1:56.10. To his right tonight will be meet record-holder and defending Ivy champion Zupan of Darmouth, who went 1:57.39 in prelims. Penn freshman Cole Hurwitz (1:57.82) qualified third.

Six Penn breastrokers dropped a combined 20 seconds to reach their respective finals. This event alone could put third place out of reach for Yale and Columbia.

200 fly – Brown 1/0/2, Columbia 3/1/1, Cornell 0/4/0, Dartmouth 0/0/2, Harvard 1/1/0, Penn 0/0/1, Princeton 2/1/0, Yale 1/1/2. Meet Record: 1:42.78 Doug Lennox (Princeton, 2009); Pool Record: 1:44.06 Kevin Quinn (Columbia, 2014)

Quinn of Columbia erased the 2009 pool record of 1:44.08 that had belonged to Princeton’s Dan Eckel with a 1:44.06 prelims swim. The next two qualifiers were Jacob Luna of Harvard and Brown’s Tommy Glenn.

The miles being at 4:20; finals are at 6:00 p.m.
