While the New England Swimming LSC Championship last weekend was named the “Senior Championships,” it was a young talent from the South Shore YMCA Strypers who turned heads in Rhode Island last weekend.

14-year-old Cullen Cashman finished 3rd in the 50 breaststroke (29.67), 3rd in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.72), and 2nd in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.61), all three of which were best times and New England Swimming LSC Records.

The swims were not a huge surprise – in June, he swam best times of 29.76, 1:04.73, and 2:21.40 in those same events. The 200 breaststroke has been his biggest progression this season, dropping almost five seconds in total.

Cashman now ranks 11th all-time in the 13-14 age group in the 100 meter breaststroke and 7th all-time in the 200 meter breaststroke in USA Swimming history.

He also posted best times in the 200 IM (2:08.81) to finish 3rd and the 400 IM (4:40.35) to finish 4th, in addition to a 1:00.49 in prelims of the 100 back. That 200 IM time also ranks him in the top 40 all-time in the age group.

Cashman now has Summer Juniors cuts in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes plus a bonus standard in the 200 IM. Cashman recently participated in the USA Swimming Zone Select Camp.

The only swimmer to beat him in that 200 breaststroke was 17-year-old Gerhardt Hoover from Commonwealth Swimming, who finished in 2:19.19. Hoover also won the 100 back (57.54) and 200 IM (2:05.01), but didn’t swim the 100 breaststroke individually. He did, however, split 1:03.79 on a winning 400 medley relay breaststroke leg.

Another 14-year-old standout on the weekend was Joey Eaddy from the Revolution Aquatic Club. He won the 200 backstroke in 2:04.38 in spite of being the youngest swimmer in the A or B finals (he ages up in December). He now ranks 12th all-time in the 13-14 age group in USA Swimming history in that event.

Other big winners at the meet include Harvard commit William Mulgrew from the Shawmut Aquatic Club. He dominated the distance races, winning the 400 free (4:02.72), 800 free (8:15.80), and 1500 free (15:38.85) individually.

His teammate Quinn White won six races on the girls’ side, including the 100 free (57.01), 200 free (2:02.63), and 200 IM (2:19.01) individually. Those were all new lifetime bests for her as well, dropping about 1.5 seconds in the 100 free, 2 in the 200 free, and almost 4 in the 200 IM.

She also swam a best time in the 50 free (26.64) to place 2nd behind Kenzie Sellars of Upper Valley, who also swam a best time to win in 26.55. In fact, the top seven finishers all swam best times in finals, including a second-and-a-half improvements from Abby Lazorisak in 3rd (27.07) and Sophie Phelps in 4th (27.11).

Other Winners and Meet Highlights:

  • Alex Barone from Charles River Aquatics dropped 2.31 seconds to win the 200 meter free in 1:53.06. That gives the 16-year-old another Futures cut, which he already had in every freestyle distance, yards and meters, from 100 through 1650 (excluding the 100 yard free).
  • Sarah Zhang from the Revolution Aquatic Club won the 400 free (4:22.55), 50 breast (33.42), 100 breast (1:11.65), 200 breast (2:29.83), and 400 IM (4:50.56). Those swims saw several best times, including a 6.3 second drop in the 400 IM to hit a Winter Juniors cut.
  • Zuri Ferguson, a University of Florida commit, picked up a sweep of her specialty event: the backstroke races. She swam 29.22 in the 50 back, 1:02.09 in the 100 back, and 2:13.63 in the 200 back, all of which just-missed her lifetime bests.
