ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Big Ten Conference office released its spring 2020 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Wednesday (June 10), with a record 200 University of Michigan student-athletes earning recognition for their work in the classroom.
U-M had 118 honorees in the fall and 87 in the winter, giving them 405 total in 2019-20. The overall total is 33 more than the 2018-19 academic year (372). The 200 spring selections are the most for the Wolverines since the Big Ten started the awards in 2009-10.
Criteria for making the Academic All-Big Ten team includes being in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The breakdown of the 200 Michigan student-athletes on the spring list includes: 10 from baseball, five from men’s golf, six from women’s golf, 22 from men’s lacrosse, 18 from women’s lacrosse, 44 from rowing, eight from softball, seven from men’s tennis, five from women’s tennis, 25 from men’s track and field, 40 from women’s track and field, and 10 from water polo.
The Distinguished Scholar Award will be awarded at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
