Neptune Breaststroker Piper Brockley Commits to USC Trojans

The USC Trojans will continue to develop a young breaststroke core with incoming freshman Piper Brockley. Brockley, who swims for Neptune Swimming and Maria Carrillo HS, is a Winter Nationals qualifier in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, as well as a Winter Juniors qualifier in the 200 IM.

Brockley recently finished 6th in the 200 IM and 12th in the 100 breast at the inaugural CIF State Championships.

Brockley’s Top Times (LCM in parentheses)

  • 100 breast – 1:02.08 (1:12.39)
  • 200 breast – 2:13.22 (2:36.64)
  • 200 IM – 2:02.16 (2:23.81)

Brockley has shown large improvements in the last year or so. For example, in the 200 breast, she was a 2:17.24 in March of 2014, then lopped off over four seconds to go her current best of 2:13.22 in December of that year.

The USC Trojans have graduated elite breaststrokers Kasey Carlson and Andrea Kropp in recent years; Carlson was a tenacious sprinter, while Kropp excelled more in the 200. They’ve recently reloaded with top-level freshmen Riley Scott, Olivia Ontjes, and Kirsten Vose, and Brockley will come in and strengthen that core group.

At last year’s Pac-12 Champs, Brockley would’ve made the 200 breast A final, the 100 breast B final, and the 200 IM C Final. The Trojans will look for her to contribute some points in those races, where they are developing a lot of depth with younger talent.

Brockley joins an extremely talented class for the Trojans, made up of National Team-er Becca Mann, young Swedish sprint star Louise Hansson, and Junior National Team-ers Stanzi Moseley and Tatum Wade (who each swam for the USA at the 2015 World Junior Champs).

Nice pickup for the Trojans and it looks like recruiting for the Women is off to a fantastic start. But what about the Trojan men? Things very quiet there with Cal hauling some top names as well as Stanford with Shoults. Trojan men for the last few years have been on a boom-bust cycle with a steller class one year then so-so the next. Last year was a boom year with 3 Top 20 recruits, so I hope this isn’t a bust cycle. I’d like to see consistent results every year to balance out the classes rather than feast-famine.
