Missy Franklin Nominated For Best Female College Athlete ESPY Award

US Olympian Missy Franklin has been nominated as a finalist to receive the 2015 ESPY Award in the Best Female College Athlete category. The only other swimmer nominated for an ESPY this year was Becca Meyers. She was nominated in the Best Female Athlete With A Disability category. The ESPYS will be presented on Wednesday, July, 15th at 8PM/ET on ABC.

Franklin had a fantastic sophomore season at California, winning all three of her individual events at the NCAA Championships to be named the 2015 NCAA Swimmer of the Year. In addition to winning all three of her events, she also broke the American records in the 200 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay, led her team to their first NCAA title in four years, and was named the CoSida Academic All-American of the Year.

Below are the other four women nominated for the Best Female College Athlete ESPY Award:

  • Taylor Cummings (Maryland Lacrosse) – “Taylor CummingsCummings won her second straight Tewaaraton and Honda Awards as the best player in women’s college lacrosse, finishing atop Division I with 100 points (63 goals, 37 assists) and leading the Terps to their second straight national championship.”
  • Lauren Haeger (Florida Softball) – “The 2015 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year, Haeger led Florida to victory in the 2015 Women’s College World Series, earning Most Outstanding Player honors.”
  • Micha Hancock (Penn St Volleyball) – “Hancock was named as the 2014 AVCA Div. I National Player of the Year, guiding Penn State to their second straight women’s volleyball national title.”
  • Breanna Stewart (UConn Basketball) – “Stewart won the 2015 AP Player of the Year, 2015 Naismith Player of the Year, and 2015 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player while leading UConn to a 38-1 record and their third-straight national title.”

Becca Meyers was nominated as the Best Female Athlete With A Disability for setting two world records (400m free and 200IM) and earnign six medals (four gold, two silver) at the 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. She is up against Kendall Gretch (Triathlete), Oksana Masters (Sit-Skier), Tatyana McFadden (Sit-Skier/Wheelchair Racer), and Greta Neimans (cyclist).
