IUPUI Women, U of Indianapolis Men Split 11th House Of Champions Invitational

The IUPUI women and the University of Indianapolis men came out on top after a three day invite at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The meet featured a mix Division 1 Mid-Major schools along a number of Division II schools. There were 10 womens teams and 9 mens teams in total. It was a great opportunity for the division 2 schools to race for NCAA while qualifying times while getting a feel for the facility. The University of Indianapolis is hosting the 2015 Division II NCAA Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium in March. For some of the Division 1 swimmers, they were shooting for the USA Swimming’s AT&T Winter National time standards. IUPUI qualified 9 athletes for the meet in two weeks.

IUPUI finished with 8 new school records, 7 of which came from the men’s team. Lewis also had a number of school records fall. Their women’s team broke 4 school records and their men’s team broke 10.

The women’s meet was led by IUPUI seniors Jenny Oleksiak and Lexi Laird. Oleksiak won the 200 IM (2:05.30) and the 200 breaststroke (2:18.28) and had a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.31). Laird earned swam an NCAA B time to win the women’s 100 backstroke (54.88). She also won the 200 backstroke (2:01.17) and earned a second place finish in the 50 freestyle (23.46). The jaguars also won both the 200 and 400 medley relays with times of 1:43.43 and 3:48.29, respectively.

University of Evansville’s Michelle Tipton had a big meet, leading her team to a third place finish. She won the 500 freestyle (4:56.00), the 200 freestyle (1:48.79), and the 1650 freestyle (17:08.51). Her teammate, Danielle Freeman, picked up two more individual wins, posting times of 51.32 in the 100 freestyle and 23.31 in the 50 freestyle. She also added a fifth place finish in the women’s 100 butterfly (56.95).

Justin Rosillo led the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds this weekend with two individual first place finishes in the 50 (20.26) and 100 (45.16) freestyles. He also added a second place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.02. They earned their other individual victories from Sean Yeh in the 100 breaststroke (55.51), Brandon Norman in the 200 IM (1:50.35), and Daniel Chan in the 200 fly (1:49.42). The Greyhounds also captured four of the five relays over the weekend.

The most impressive swims of the weekend came from Lewis’ Bryan Wiener. Wiener jumped to the top of the division II national rankings in both backstroke events. He won the 100 backstroke with the fastest time in the country this year at 47.05 and then posted a time of 1:46.63 during prelims of the 200 backstroke. His 200 backstroke moves him to fourth in the DII national rankings.
