The 106th Korean National Sports Festival entered its penultimate night of competition at the Busan Sajik Indoor Swimming Pool with yet additional records going down on the men’s side.

We reported how 19-year-old Kim Youngbeom fired off a monster new benchmark in the heats of the men’s 100m freestyle, ripping a time of 47.39.

That hacked over half a second off the teen’s previous personal best and the result easily cleared the former Korean record of 47.56 that teammate Hwang Sunwoo clocked in the semi-finals of the men’s 100m free at the 2020 Olympic Games.

You can read more about that performance here.

Kim also raced in the final of the men’s 100m butterfly this evening, settling for silver a time of 51.85.

That came within striking distance of his best-ever and former Korean record of 51.65 established last year.

Taking the men’s 1fly gold, however, was 27-year-old Yang Jaehoon.

Yang stopped the clock at 51.29 to reap the top of the podium and down Kim’s record.

Splits are not available at this time, but Yang’s effort represented his first-ever foray under the 52-second barrier.

Entering tonight’s race, Yang’s previous personal best rested at the 52.05 logged in March of this year to rank as Korea’s #2 performer in history.

Bronze this evening went to Kim Jihoon who touched in 52.21.

Yang’s new 51.29 Korean benchmark ranks the veteran #1 in the world on the season, dethroning former leader Gomi Tomonbu (JPN) and his time of 51.35.
