Yale Teams Keep Rolling With Sweep of Brown

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women’s swimming and diving team won its second event of the weekend on Saturday, taking down Brown by a score of 173-127. The victory moves the Bulldogs to 2-0 on the season.

Yale did not find as much success in the freestyle events on Saturday as it did on Friday, but did win two of the events. Sophomore Ali Truwit won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:16.40), while captain Kendall Brent finished just behind Truwit with a time of 10:19.18. Sophomore Izzi Henig won the 50-yard freestyle (23.59).

Yale swept the backstroke and breaststroke events on Saturday. First-year Jaime Yeh won the first event of her collegiate career, pacing all swimmers in the 100-yard backstroke (56.49). Junior Cate Sawkins won her first event of the season in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.61). Yale’s sophomore class came through in the breaststroke events. MaryKate Buckley (1:04.98) took first in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Olivia Paoletti won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.85).

Junior transfer student Caitlin Tycz won her first event in a Bulldogs’ suit, taking first in the 100-yard butterfly (55.33).

For the second consecutive day, junior Nikki Watters finished with the highest diving scores in the 1-meter diving event (273.23).

The Bulldogs will take on Columbia next Friday in their first away meet of the season.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men’s swimming team swept its meets this weekend, defeating Brown 164–136 on Saturday afternoon after beating MIT in the season opener Friday. The diving squad was tremendous and the swimming team showed resilience to grab the victory. 

Liam Bogart kicked off what would be a massive day for the sophomore with a first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle, as he swam a 9:31.63 total time. Additionally, first year Joseph Page placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.99. 

The butterfly events were also vital today for the Elis. First year Connor Lee won the 200-yard butterfly with a rapid 1:49.89 time. Junior Patrick Frith was runner-up in the event with a time of 1:50.21. 

Senior Henry Gaissert continued his early-season dominance in the freestyle, as he achieved first place in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 20.47. The diving team was similarly impressive, with junior Christian DeVol and first-year Jean Paul Ditto taking first and second respectively in the 3-meter dive with scores of 382.73 and 372.45. 

Bogart and Page continued to contribute in huge ways throughout the meet. Page’s 44.78 finish was good for first in the 100-yard freestyle, while Bogart won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.96. Brown had no answer for Bogart, as he also achieved victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:34.97.  

Lee took home his second win of the afternoon in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a time of 49.02. Ditto and DeVol swapped places in the 1-meter dive, with the first-year taking first and the junior taking second. Ditto posted a 344.63 score and DeVol scored a 308.85.  

Yale next swims against Columbia in New York on Nov. 16.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men’s swimming & diving team was defeated by Yale, 164-136, to open the 2019-20 season on Saturday at Payne Whitney Gym. The Bears won seven out of 16 events on the day and five different swimmers recorded first place finishes.

“Amazing effort by the team today on the road against a very talented and very deep Yale team,” said head coach Kevin Norman. “We won seven of 16 events including both relays. And to win the last two events of the meet, the 200 IM and 400 free relay, shows how tough and resilient this group is. Our seniors did a fantastic job leading today throughout a long, competitive meet. I’m so proud of this group.”

Brown opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay, with senior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.), freshman Vincent Huang (League City, Texas), sophomore I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) and senior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) swimming to a time of 1:29.10.

The Bears went 2-3-4 in the first individual event, the 1000 freestyle, as sophomore Nico Ortega (Caracas, Venezuela/Westport, Conn.) took second in 9:40.11 and was followed by freshman Lukas Scheidl (Mendham, N.J.) (9:40.47) and freshman Kabir Randhawa (Dix Hills, N.Y.) (9:45.05).

Junior Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) followed with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:37.97). The junior later took second in the 500 freestyle (4:35.90).

Senior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) won the 100 backstroke in 50.32 while sophomore Billy Knaul (Sudbury, Mass.) took third (51.37). In the 200 of the event, Sullivan claimed second (1:50.19) and sophomore Reid Arwood (Asheville, N.C.) took third (1:51.60).

Huang won the 100 breaststroke in 56.55 while sophomore Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) won the 200 (2:03.02). Hayes later turned in a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:50.57). The 100 butterfly saw Qiao come in second (49.22) and Sung place third (49.58).

Senior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) came in second in the 50 freestyle (20.52) and was narrowly out-touched for first (20.47). Cline also took second in the 100 freestyle (45.42).

On the boards, sophomore Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) placed third in the 1M with a score of 291.15 and claimed fourth in the 3M (299.63).

The Bears claimed the top two spots in the 200 IM with junior Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) winning in 1:51.66 and Hayes coming in second (1:53.84).

Brown capped off the day by winning the 400 freestyle relay, with Cline, Sung, Sullivan and Smilenov swimming to a time of 2:59.76.

The Bears next compete at Penn on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 12:00 p.m.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Brown women’s swimming & diving team was defeated by Yale, 173-127, in its season opening meet on Saturday at Payne Whitney Gym. Freshman Audrey Orange (New York City, N.Y.) picked up two wins in her first collegiate meet, taking victories in the 200 and 500 freestyle, to lead the Bears.

The rookies had a strong showing in the first meet of the year, with freshmen Nell Chidley (Mystic, Conn.) and Sasha Liu (Piedmont, Calif.) also winning events in their debut in addition to Orange.

“This was a very solid first outing for the 2019-20 team,” said head coach Kate Kovenock. “We have been talking a lot about being process oriented and that’s starting to click with individuals. I’m thoroughly looking forward to our next two weeks of training and racing opportunities.”

Sophomore Emma Whall (Dover, N.H.) got things going for the Bears in the first individual event, the 1000 freestyle, taking third in 10:21.33. Orange next recorded the first victory of the day for Brown in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 1:51.27.

Third place finishes were turned in by freshman Sage Matsushima (Huntington Beach, Calif.) in the 100 backstroke (56.67) and Liu in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.54). Liu later came back to pick up a win in the 200 IM (2:06.17).

Chidley next recorded a victory in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.35. Brown went 2-3 in the 100 of the event with Chidley (56.51) beating out teammate Matsushima (56.70).

Junior Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.) won the 100 freestyle in 50.88 and took second in the 50 freestyle (23.67). The 500 freestyle saw Orange record her second victory, registering a time of 4:56.88. Senior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) also placed third in the 500 (5:05.58).

Senior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.25.

In diving, sophomore Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and junior Julia Feord (Royal Oak, Mich.) took the top two spots in the 3M with scores of 265.65 and 257.48, respectively. Feord led Brown in the 1M, placing second with a score of 258.90.

The Bears closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.99) with Seaman, junior Tory Center (Madison, Wis.), Orange and senior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) combining for the time.

The Bears next compete at Penn on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 12:00 p.m.
